About The Position

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) is dedicated to eliminating health inequities and premature mortality. CHECW focuses on social determinants of health, addressing both upstream and downstream factors to improve the health and well-being of New Yorkers through various bureaus, including the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health. The Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health collaborates with clinical and community partners to enhance access to chronic disease prevention and management programs, particularly for those facing significant health challenges. It offers public health and social services, organizes community events, fosters partnerships, and conducts research to drive evidence-based actions and advance equity in the Bronx. The Bureau aims to empower New Yorkers with knowledge and tools for healthier lives through programs covering diabetes, asthma, nutrition, food security, newborn safety, and childbirth. The Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health is seeking an Asthma Program Director to lead, develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive asthma program in the South Bronx.

Requirements

  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental science or in public health.
  • To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' or '2' above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in '2' above.
  • Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in '1' and '2' above.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and assistance in the design and implementation of evaluation projects, including the development of research instruments, materials, and protocols, and oversight of data privacy and security.
  • Support interpretation of research and evaluation findings and develop programmatic changes in accordance with data findings.
  • Oversee asthma program staff and manage all programmatic and operational activities of the Bronx Asthma Program.
  • Work with the Executive Director to develop and implement a strategic plan for the Bronx Asthma Program.
  • Conduct research to identify emerging trends, disparities, and best practices in asthma care and management.
  • Design and implement research studies to evaluate the effectiveness of Bronx Asthma Program interventions.
  • Analyze data to inform program improvements and policy recommendations.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present research at conferences to advance knowledge in asthma care and public health.
  • Assist with the development of Bronx Asthma Program contract proposals and performance reports to ensure compliance with agency requirements and federal/state/city guidelines.
  • Establish quarterly program goals, objectives, and metrics.
  • Ensure Bronx Asthma Program grant reports are produced and submitted, and manage the post-award process, including managing budgets and expenditures.
  • Report on all Bronx Asthma Program activities to agency leadership and colleagues from other City and State agencies.
  • Develop and coordinate systems for data collection and management, evaluation, reporting, and communication.
  • Collaborate with other agency asthma programs to coordinate and integrate programs and services to address community needs.
  • Strengthen collaboration with community-based organizations, healthcare organizations, managed care organizations, and government agencies to improve the quality of care and service delivery to children with asthma and their families.
  • Represent the bureau and department at local and national meetings.
  • Participate in public health emergency response as needed and support the agency in community engagement during an emergency.
  • Perform other duties as required.
