About The Position

New York Public Radio, home to WNYC, WQXR, New Jersey Public Radio, WNYC Studios, and The Greene Space, is seeking a Broadcast Engineer in our Programming Department. Broadcast Engineers are the technical professionals at the heart of New York Public Radio. They operate studio equipment alongside reporters and producers in the creation of live broadcasts, podcasts, in-person performances, videos and more in service of NYPR’s public service mission. This Broadcast Engineer position will run the live control board for New York Public Radio’s signature shows as needed, with a special focus on weekday live shows and the WNYC News Department, and will also assist on all other production needs within the Programming Department. You’ll report to the Director of Broadcast Operations in the WNYC Programming Department. The successful candidate will have a good sense of the New York Public Radio sound, some knowledge of New York Public Radio programs, superior attention to detail, and a background in live audio production. The position requires excellent people skills as much of the job will require interfacing with content producers at NYPR.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience in live audio production, preferably live radio production.
  • Familiarity with the sound of New York Public Radio or public radio generally
  • Familiarity with the Zetta On-Air Delivery system is helpful.
  • Fluency in audio editing, knowledge of live on-air board protocols and other systems for broadcast/digital delivery of audio
  • Experience using ISDN, AoIP or phone hybrids
  • Expertise with Pro Tools
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and concepts as necessary
  • Ability to work within a highly collaborative team in a fast paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Operate the board during local and national live broadcasts including regular live shows, special events and fundraisers
  • Record live interviews with both in studio and remote guests using ISDN, AoIP or phone hybrids
  • Operate Pro Tools at an expert, facile level
  • Gather and edit actualities and ambient recordings
  • Clean up poor audio using iZotope RX and other technical tools and plugins
  • Score using production music libraries and commissioned music cues
  • Manage and archive audio assets and session files
  • Coordinate with national distribution hub in DC
  • Update news content for breaking news
  • Assemble weekend shows
  • Provide disaster recovery support
  • Provide additional coverage for the following situations: Vacation and sick time for other on-air live broadcast engineers, Weekends, when needed, Many holidays
