About The Position

This position is accountable for the design, implementation, inspection, and documentation of all field bridge painting contracts and advising the resident engineering staff relative to the painting portion of bridge construction and rehabilitation projects throughout the district. The incumbent may also be accountable for the construction of one or more state highway improvements within the district when there are no active bridge paint contracts.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Frequent district and state-wide travel with overnight stays. During the construction season, there is a possibility of temporary residence during the workweek at or near the project site.
  • Successful completion of background screening.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as Resident Technician or Bridge Painting Inspector on bridge painting or metalizing contracts providing technical and managerial skills sufficient to ensure completion of projects in accordance with the plans, specifications, and contractual agreements.
  • Maintains accurate and complete project records, reports, and quantity documentation.
  • Assists the district Operations Bridge Maintenance Engineer in maintaining a current in-place bridge coating assessment and bridge painting priority list.
  • Conducts follow-up inspections of bridge painting contracts to determine effectiveness of the coating system.
  • Reports the district’s hazardous waste activities to the Illinois Environmental Protective Agency (IEPA) annually.
  • Submits Notification of Regulated Waste Activity forms for an assigned IEPA identification number when needed.
  • Advises district resident engineering staff relative to the painting portion of bridge construction and rehabilitation projects.
  • Develops plans for the district Annual Bridge Painting Program.
  • Trains, motivates, and evaluates assigned personnel.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
