About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a Bridge Maintenance Specialist 2 to perform journey-level bridge maintenance, repair, and operational work on over 1,300 bridges throughout the Northwest Region. This role is crucial for preserving transportation infrastructure and ensuring safe, reliable travel. The incumbent will perform skilled maintenance activities with a strong emphasis on safety for employees, coworkers, and the traveling public, while also contributing to a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.

Requirements

• Significant knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance (Mechanical Aptitude).
• Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications (Mathematical Reasoning).
• Knowledge and understanding of structural systems such as concrete, steel, and wood, including the application of materials, methods, and tools involved in construction or repair (Building and Construction).
• Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including principles, techniques, procedures, and the ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify issues (Engineering and Technical Application).

• Class A CDL, N tank endorsement, without restrictions E for no manual transmission and L for air brake restriction, or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment.
• A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
• Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
• Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work at elevated heights above land or water and from catwalks, platforms, and specialized equipment.
• Ability to work day, night, weekend, and holiday shifts as required to support operational and emergency response needs.

Responsibilities

• Perform journey-level maintenance, repair, and preservation work on bridges, tunnels, and related transportation structures.
• Repair and maintain structural and non-structural bridge components, including expansion joints, bridge rails, catwalks, decks, steel elements, and concrete features.
• Restore and replace timber bridge components such as caps, piles, and stringers.
• Remove logs, debris, and other obstructions from bridge piers and critical infrastructure components.
• Fabricate steel and aluminum components using appropriate tools, equipment, and construction techniques.
• Operate specialized equipment and vehicles, including cranes, Under Bridge Inspection Trucks (UBIT), Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMA), and trucks up to 80,000 pounds GVW.
• Utilize power, air, and hand tools to support maintenance, repair, and construction activities.
• Implement traffic control measures, including flagging operations, lane closures, road closures, and detours, while maintaining compliance with established safety standards and procedures.
