About The Position

The City of Richmond Department of Public Works is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Bridge Inspector in the Bridge and Structure Maintenance Division. The incumbent is responsible for examining bridges and related structures, ensuring conformity to the federal, state, and city codes, regulations, and engineering specifications. This class inspects bridges and culverts owned by the City of Richmond as required by the Federal Highway Administration and the Virginia Department of Transportation. Incumbents may prepare reports, make repair recommendations, ensure structures are properly rated and evaluated, coordinate with consultant engineering firms, and maintain city databases on structures. This position performs occasional work at extensive heights and requires the ability to operate at high altitudes.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in engineering or related area
  • Four (4) years of experience related to inspections
  • Requires completion of Federal Highway Administration engineering-based classes.

Nice To Haves

  • Five (5) years of active experience and signature authority related to bridge inspections; preferred
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department ) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

Responsibilities

  • Preparing Bridge Safety Inspection reports based on state and federal guidelines to include documentation with photos, verbal descriptions, and repair recommendations and updating City databases
  • Inspecting structures by reviewing previous reports and documenting current conditions to include assessing, photographing, measuring, and recording all deficiencies and determining if any deficiencies require immediate action
  • Planning inspections of structures to include monitoring traffic conditions and requesting necessary lane closures, rental of equipment such as boats, noting special features that may require extra scrutiny, operating other equipment needed such as lights and ladders, and requesting encroaching vegetation removal
  • Monitoring progress of consulting engineering firm assignments, gathering data for consultants, providing repair recommendations, and preparing miscellaneous reports
