About The Position

WSP is seeking an experienced Bridge Inspection TEC Lead for its South Carolina Bridge Inspection Group. This position can be based out of Columbia, SC or Greenville, SC. The role involves working closely with the bridge inspection District Manager for Carolina on a full-time basis, focusing on business development and securing bridge inspection and repair work for various transportation agencies including NCDOT, SCDOT, and local authorities. The individual will independently evaluate the condition, function, and load-carrying capacity of structures and their components, providing recommendations for repair, rehabilitation, or replacement. The position requires planning, scheduling, and performing SCDOT bridge inspections in compliance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and the AASHTO Manual for Condition Evaluation of Bridges. Responsibilities include liaising with client staff, communicating critical findings, directing field team members, enforcing safety, and creating/reviewing inspection reports. The role also involves ensuring technical compliance, ethical decision-making, and supporting broader bridge inspection groups with proposals and reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering Licensure.
  • 10+ years of experience in bridge inspection (NBIS) with NCDOT and other transportation clients.
  • Project Manager/Team Leader experience in NC and other states.
  • Experience in successful management of bridge inspection projects for NCDOT and/or SCDOT.
  • Attendance of NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges course.
  • Attendance of additional NHI courses (e.g., NSTM, LRFR and Scour related).
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high-level of self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Physically capable of performing continuous field work, including working at heights, in close quarters, climbing, carrying ladders and gear, and working in adverse weather conditions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to think critically and solve problems.
  • Ability to work well in a team-oriented structure.
  • Valid, unrestricted driver's license.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.

  • Additional FHWA/NHI Training - (130078) Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges/Nonredundant Steel Tension Steel Members.
  • (130087) Inspection and Maintenance of Ancillary Highway Structures.
  • Experience with the inspection of railroad and complex bridges, tunnels and ancillary structures.
  • Familiar with or certifications in various NDT techniques and UAS applications.
  • Familiar with certifications in rope access techniques and/or UAS operations.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and perform SCDOT bridge inspections in accordance with NBIS and AASHTO standards.
  • Liaise with client field/facility staff and communicate critical condition findings.
  • Direct other field team members and enforce safe operations.
  • Create, assist with creating, and/or review all required inspection reports.
  • Ensure technical compliance with all applicable standards and specifications.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct.
  • Support the Mid-Atlantic District and National Bridge Inspection group with inspections in different jurisdictions.
  • Support in the preparation of proposals, tasks, reports, and other documents.
  • Utilize education, licensure, and experience to perform independent evaluations of structures and components.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members.
  • Supervise, train, and direct the work of team members.
  • Manage time and budget effectively.
