This position functions as the Mechanic and Back-Up Operator for the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift used in the District Bridge Inspection Unit. The role focuses on supporting Inspection Teams and serving as a required crew member to operate the UBIU (Snooper). The individual will be responsible for troubleshooting, road testing, maintenance, and repair of the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift, as well as other vehicles, lifts, arrow boards, and boats used by the Bridge Inspection Unit and the District. Responsibilities include scheduling and performing routine maintenance and repairs according to manufacturer and MassDOT requirements, ensuring all documentation related to maintenance and repairs is current, and maintaining the Under Bridge Aerial Lift's readiness on a 24-hour basis. The work environment involves all types of weather, exposure to hazardous conditions at bridge sites (including live traffic and railroad corridors), fumes, loud sounds, and potential travel. High altitudes may also be encountered. The job requires the use of hand tools, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and may involve varied shifts, weekends, holidays, nights, and emergency call-outs. Employees may also be required to clear natural growth or obstructions hindering access or visibility of signs. A valid Massachusetts CDL Class B License and a Hoisting License 1C or better are required, with a 6-month grace period for the hoisting license. Training to meet ANSI standards for UBIU operation, inspection, and maintenance is also necessary.
