About The Position

This position functions as the Mechanic and Back-Up Operator for the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift used in the District Bridge Inspection Unit. The role focuses on supporting Inspection Teams and serving as a required crew member to operate the UBIU (Snooper). The individual will be responsible for troubleshooting, road testing, maintenance, and repair of the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift, as well as other vehicles, lifts, arrow boards, and boats used by the Bridge Inspection Unit and the District. Responsibilities include scheduling and performing routine maintenance and repairs according to manufacturer and MassDOT requirements, ensuring all documentation related to maintenance and repairs is current, and maintaining the Under Bridge Aerial Lift's readiness on a 24-hour basis. The work environment involves all types of weather, exposure to hazardous conditions at bridge sites (including live traffic and railroad corridors), fumes, loud sounds, and potential travel. High altitudes may also be encountered. The job requires the use of hand tools, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and may involve varied shifts, weekends, holidays, nights, and emergency call-outs. Employees may also be required to clear natural growth or obstructions hindering access or visibility of signs. A valid Massachusetts CDL Class B License and a Hoisting License 1C or better are required, with a 6-month grace period for the hoisting license. Training to meet ANSI standards for UBIU operation, inspection, and maintenance is also necessary.

Requirements

At least three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the repair, maintenance, and overhaul of automotive equipment such as automobiles, trucks, bulldozers, cranes, front end loaders, etc.
At least one year of the experience must have been in a supervisory capacity.
A valid Massachusetts Class B CDL motor vehicle operator's license.
A valid Massachusetts Class 1B, 2A and 4G or better hoisting license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety (must be obtained within 6 months of hire).
Must complete proper training to meet ANSI standards.

Nice To Haves

A certificate or diploma from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school, at the high school level or above, with a major in automotive shop practice may be substitution for one year of the required (A) experience.

Responsibilities

Functions as the Mechanic and Back-Up Operator for the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift.
Troubleshoots, road tests, maintains, and repairs the Under-Bridge Aerial Lift, and other vehicles, lifts, arrow boards, and boats.
Schedules and performs routine maintenance and repairs per manufacturer and MassDOT requirements.
Ensures all documentation related to maintenance and repairs is current and up-to-date.
Maintains the Under Bridge Aerial Lift's readiness on a 24-hour basis.
Works independently for District 2 Bridge Inspection and assists District 2 Maintenance personnel.
Operates the under-bridge aerial lift as needed.
Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and powered equipment.
Diagnoses faulty mechanical performance on gasoline and diesel engines and estimates repair needs.
Repairs and maintains radiators, cooling systems, engines, brake systems, fuel systems, and timing mechanisms.
Repairs and services conventional transmissions and makes minor adjustments to automatic transmissions.
Repairs and services clutch assemblies, differentials, transfer cases, torque converters, and gear trains.
Maintains, repairs, and performs diagnostics on ignitions systems, electrical systems, and air conditioners.
Maintains, repairs, adjusts, and replaces elements of chassis assembly.
Balances wheels, mounts, dismounts, services, and repairs tires.
Performs body and fender work, including painting and upholstery repair.
Performs torch cutting on metal parts and equipment.
May perform complex mechanical work on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and power trains.
May operate equipment such as honing machines, valve resurfacing machines, drill presses, or grinders.
Obtains parts and supplies and initiates requests for special replacement parts.
Maintains time and cost distribution records for motor equipment maintenance and repair.
Drives passenger cars, trucks, and other MassDOT equipment as necessary.
Available for scheduled overtime work and/or emergency conditions.
Maintains service records and equipment documentation.
Clears growth and obstructions and deploys/monitors traffic control.
Works with various vendors to procure parts and equipment.
Works with Consultants, Contractors, Municipalities, and other MassDOT departments utilizing assistance with the UBIU.
Works with Detail Officers and Railroad flaggers to provide safe access for UBIU deployment.
