About The Position

If you're an engineering student with a passion for bridge engineering and looking to take your understanding of this field to the next level, the Nebraska Department of Transportation's Bridge Division is the perfect place for you. With ownership of more than 3,500 state-owned bridges and data management responsibility for all 15,000 bridges in the state, we have extensive experience and expertise in the field of bridge engineering. As a member of the NDOT team, you'll be part of an organization that is responsible for planning, developing, designing, constructing, maintaining, and administering the state highway system. Our mission is to preserve the billions of dollars that Nebraskans have invested in their state highway system while making the highways safe and efficient, all while completing projects in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Successful completion of our internship program can open up opportunities for full-time positions with the Nebraska Department of Transportation's Bridge Division. Requirements

  • Must be a three-fourths time student in good standing majoring in a discipline or field related to the work to be assigned.
  • Ability to work 10 - 16 hours per week.
  • Must be able to work at least 10 hours per week (or more to be determined by the employing agency based on the applicants' class schedules) when classes are in session.

Responsibilities

  • Learning how to read bridge construction plans effectively and quickly
  • Developing plan and model drafting skills
  • Calculating loads acting on bridges
  • Becoming familiar with specialized bridge design and management software
  • Collaborating with experts in structural, hydrology and hydraulics, geotechnical, roadway, materials, construction, and environmental engineering, as an active member of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Calculating bridge capacity for non-legal truck loads
  • Gaining knowledge of hydrology and hydraulic calculations necessary to size hydraulic structures
  • Providing support to bridge inspection teams
  • Learning about how bridges are constructed through in-the-field opportunities
