About The Position

This position will serve as Bridge Maintenance Engineer for Division 2, which includes Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Greene, Jones, Lenoir, Pamlico and Pitt Counties. The role involves planning, assigning, directing, and coordinating a number of physically dispersed bridge crews in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of bridges, drainage pipes exceeding forty-eight inches in diameter, and box culverts. The engineer will manage and supervise all bridge maintenance and force account construction for the eight Division 2 counties in accordance with established policies and procedures. The position requires knowledge of civil engineering principles and highway methods and techniques, as well as the ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts, interpret plans, provisions, and specifications, and policies, procedures, and regulations. The role also demands the ability to supervise and monitor the maintenance program for efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials, formulate a comprehensive bridge maintenance program within budget limits, supervise and evaluate employee performance, communicate effectively, maintain positive working relationships, and operate a motor vehicle safely. Work may include emergency situations, nights, and weekends. The candidate must be able to traverse steep and uneven terrain, work in high volumes of traffic, and endure extreme temperatures/weather conditions. Safety toe footwear will be required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles of civil engineering and highway methods and techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of the use and operation of all field and office engineering instruments.
  • Ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts.
  • Ability to interpret plans, provisions, and specifications.
  • Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Ability to establish work relationships between the department and citizens.
  • Ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain.
  • Must have ability to operate motor vehicle safely.
  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Nice To Haves

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of professional civil engineering as they apply to highway and bridge construction.
  • Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various transportation accounting systems.
  • Experience in the supervision and evaluation of personnel, to include hiring and disciplinary actions.
  • Customer service experience with the general public, local government officials, fellow employees, etc.
  • Experience in conducting meetings with employees, citizens, and public officials in order to conduct investigations and resolve various issues.
