About The Position

A civil engineering firm in Charleston, West Virginia is seeking to hire an experienced Bridge Engineer / Structural Lead. In this pivotal role, you will lead and direct the design and structural development of complex bridge projects across West Virginia and Ohio. You will perform end-to-end structural modeling, oversee CAD/plan development, ensure strict QA/QC standards, mentor junior engineering staff, and manage key client and agency relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in West Virginia (WV) or Ohio (OH) required (or the ability to obtain via reciprocity within a reasonable timeframe).
  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive, hands-on bridge engineering and structural design experience.
  • Proven expertise in designing all bridge structural components according to AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
  • Familiarity with WVDOH and/or ODOT project development processes, bridge design guidelines, and plan presentation standards.
  • Proficiency in CADD platforms such as MicroStation or OpenRoads Designer, alongside structural analysis software (e.g., LEAP Bridge, MDX, STAAD, RISA, or similar).
  • Strong leadership, project management, and time management skills with a proven track record of handling multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Candidates are required to pass a Criminal Background Check and a 10 Panel Drug Screen.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the comprehensive structural design of bridge projects, including steel and concrete superstructures, substructures, deep/shallow foundations, and retaining walls.
  • Perform, review, and verify complex structural analysis and design calculations in accordance with AASHTO LRFD specifications.
  • Oversee full construction plan development, detail preparation, material quantity takeoffs, and accurate construction cost estimates.
  • Conduct rigorous QA/QC peer reviews of technical calculations, structural drawings, and project specifications prior to client submission.
  • Serve as a primary technical point of contact, coordinating smoothly with clients, state transportation agencies (WVDOH / ODOT), and subconsultants.
  • Provide technical guidance, direct supervision, and professional mentorship to junior and project-level engineering staff.
  • Support division growth by assisting with project proposals, technical scope development, fee estimates, and client presentations.
