About The Position

The overall function of this position is managing the District's Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Program. This position is located in the District 08 Bridge Inspection and Maintenance Section/Unit 002 of The Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Assistant District Administrator of Operations. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform duties many times without supervision or with minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facility the performance of required task. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service laws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Requirements

  • Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering plus one of the following: Three years of licensed engineering experience; or Seven years of professional engineering experience.
  • A master's degree in engineering will substitute for one year of professional engineering experience.
  • A doctorate degree in engineering will substitute for two years of professional engineering experience.
  • Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of professional engineering experience.
  • There is no substitution for licensed engineering experience.
  • Engineering experience gained while licensed as a professional engineer will be accepted as licensed engineering experience.
  • Engineering experience gained after earning an ABET-accredited degree and prior to earning a professional engineer's license (e.g., as an engineer intern applicant, engineer intern, or equivalent) will be accepted as professional level engineering experience.
  • Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. If one of those applicants is selected for the position, he/she will be required to obtain a Louisiana license prior to appointment.
  • The hiring agency will verify that all licensing requirements are met.
  • Louisiana Professional Engineer licenses are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the daily operations of the Bridge Maintenance and Inspection Section.
  • Coordinate all emergency bridge repairs, caused by vehicles and marine vessel accidents, with other agencies and Department personnel.
  • Responsible for the assisting in the preparation of construction plans, specifications and assisting in the letter bid process for reimbursable bridge repairs.
  • Planning and performing inspection and maintenance, as well as repairs of bridges, a movable bridge, and underpasses, to ensure a safe and cost-effective maintenance program.
  • Provide public and private agencies, officials, landowners, media, and department personnel proper notification of repair work, closures, accidents, inspections, and marine activities.
  • Write repair requests for major projects and accident damages to structures.
  • Supervises the daily planning, scheduling, and operation for the Bridge Inspection Section.
