About The Position

GFT is seeking a Bridge Designer to join our Transportation Practice in Pittsburgh! This role follows a hybrid work model. Working on the bridge team at GFT offers the opportunity to engage in transformative projects that enhance transportation infrastructure and improve community connectivity. The role involves performing technical evaluations, inspections, and designs for highway/railway bridges and related structures, including structural design and analysis, bridge inspection, load ratings, and quantity calculations. It requires performing assignments of limited scope that involve standard techniques and procedures, with some interpretation of design manuals and guidelines under the supervision of senior staff. The successful candidate will prepare details and plans, assist with bridge inspections and structural design activities, gather and record information for cost estimating, prepare basic specifications, review shop drawings, draft technical reports, utilize CADD for construction plans (including 3D models), work as part of a project team, follow project delivery and quality control procedures, and maintain professional knowledge through education and professional society participation.

Requirements

  • BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent
  • 0 to 4 years of experience
  • Experience with CADD required

Nice To Haves

  • Fundamentals of Engineering has been taken and passed, preferred
  • Working knowledge of Design Software
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Possesses strong oral and written communications skills

Responsibilities

  • Prepares details and plans in support of broader engineering activities involving the design of highway/railway bridges and related structures.
  • Assists with bridge inspection activities for routine structures under direction of Inspection Team Leader.
  • Assists with structural design activities for routine structures under direction of Design Team Leader.
  • Gathers, calculates and records information to be used for cost estimating.
  • Prepares basic specifications
  • Reviews shop drawings to evaluate compliance with contract documents.
  • Prepares first draft of technical reports or sections of larger reports.
  • Utilizes CADD to develop construction plans which may include 3D models.
  • Works as part of a project team within the bridge discipline.
  • Follows project delivery and quality control procedures and standards in compliance with client and company specific guidelines on time and within budget.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through attendance at educational workshops and participation in professional societies.
