About The Position

WSP is initiating a search for a Bridge Design Engineer! This position will sit out of our Charlotte, NC office. Work on high-profile, complex bridge and structure design projects that shape the region’s infrastructure. Tasks may include basic assistance with design, concept development, and plan production of load-bearing structures, specifically bridges. Generates accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality. Your Impact Position to perform engineering analysis and design of transportation structures such as bridges and retaining walls. The position requires knowledge and application of basic engineering principles under close supervision; work is reviewed for adequacy and accuracy. Typical duties may include the following: Assist with performing basic professional structural engineering work relating to evaluation, development, design or selection of required structures. Performs analysis and design calculations for structures using programs such as LEAP Bridge, Midas, etc. Calculate quantities for structures. Use MicroStation and OpenBridge to perform engineering tasks, including 3D modeling of bridges/structures and developing structural design plans in CADD. Reviews fabricator/contractor working drawings. Researches applicable design codes and guidelines to ensure design compliance. Coordinates assignments with the project team and supervisor. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, engineering studies and surveys, and construction. Complete training on assigned tasks. Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering from an ABET Accredited institution
  • 1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.
  • Familiarity with relevant structural design codes, familiarity with AASHTO Bridge codes preferred.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, Geopak, OpenBridge, AASHTOWare BrR, etc.).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
  • Master's Degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with emphasis in structures.
