About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of Handley Regional Library (HRL), assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of a small library branch. Examines operations on a daily basis to ensure that all resources are managed as effectively as possible.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of library principles, methods, materials and practices, including knowledge of library functions and organization.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate branch operations and establish priorities, to train and supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Knowledge of popular and current reading interests.
  • Ability to operate library computer systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and library patrons, to be flexible.
  • Good communication skills with both children and adults.
  • Good organizational and clerical skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and write reports; ability to work independently; ability to work quickly, accurately, and efficiently; ability to exercise initiative, tact, leadership, and independent judgment.
  • Bachelor's degree and library experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited program and library experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Runs branch library on a day-to-day basis.
  • Helps patrons and volunteers in the use of library collections, the online catalog, and other computer resources.
  • Works with the Technical Services Manager and IT contractor to provide quality circulation and computer services.
  • Contacts Information Services staff in other libraries for assistance with reference inquiries.
  • Promotes and publicizes the library and its services at community events and organizations.
  • Works with branch staff to promote use of the library and its collections via displays and other marketing initiatives.
  • Coordinates branch programming for adults and youth.
  • Ensures branch collections are well-balanced and maintained by communicating to system-wide selectors the needs of the community and by managing branch inventory and weeding projects.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and works closely with volunteers and branch staff to provide quality service.
  • Prepares staff schedules in a timely manner.
  • Conducts interim and annual performance reviews, identifies staff training needs, and regularly evaluates staff performance.
  • Works with staff and volunteers to improve competencies as needed.
  • Administers and interprets policy and procedures of the Handley Regional Library Board and library administration to volunteers and patrons.
  • Resolves patron and human resource issues.
  • Attends regional staff meetings as scheduled, contributing to the formulation of policy, procedures, and priorities of the regional system.
  • Advises the Library Director and the branch advisory council on branch services including patron needs and programs.
  • Works with library administration to set branch goals and objectives aligned with the regional library system mission, vision, and long-range plan.
  • Performs administrative record keeping and reporting to include monthly Branch reports to the Board as well as annual Branch presentation to the Board.
  • Maintains statistical records such as computer usage, programs, and volunteer hours.
  • Analyzes statistics, reports, and community feedback to determine improvements to collections, services, programs, and policies.
  • Handles all Branch monies in a timely and responsible manner according to regional library procedures.
  • Keeps local government officials apprised of library's accomplishments.
  • Works with branch advisory council and volunteers to promote and publicize branch.
  • Maintains library building, grounds, furnishings, and equipment in conjunction with library administration and/or local government maintenance departments.
  • Negotiates with contractors and local government maintenance personnel to see that work is accomplished quickly, effectively and at the least cost to the Library.
  • Works with branch advisory council and HRL administration to secure supplies, furniture, and equipment for branch operations.
