About The Position

Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway (W&LE) is seeking dedicated individuals to train as Brakemen/Conductors. W&LE is one of the largest regional railroads in the United States and the largest in Ohio, operating 840 miles of track across Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The company was founded in 1871 and has a long legacy of delivering dependable, efficient service. This role involves training in a classroom setting followed by on-the-job training, with opportunities for promotion to Conductor and eventually Engineer.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be willing and able to work any hours at any location on the railroad in OH and PA.
  • Must be able to report to work two hours after notification.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to reach overhead to lift objects.
  • Must meet hearing and vision acuity standards.
  • Must be able to climb ladders on freight cars.
  • Must be able to get on and off equipment.
  • Must be able to ride moving cars by hanging on grab irons or ladders.
  • Must be able to judge and control the speed and clearance distance of cars.
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather for many hours at a time.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven and irregular surfaces for long distances.
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 85 pounds.
  • A DUI or OVI conviction within the last three years may disqualify you from consideration.
  • Employees are subject to pre-employment and frequent drug and alcohol testing.
  • All positions require pre-employment background verification, physical, and drug/alcohol screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Individuals are promoted to conductor after completing brakeman training.
  • Conductors are the primary source from which W&LE selects candidates for future Engineer training.
  • Employees must accept promotion to the position of Locomotive Engineer.
  • Overtime work is required.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain information from the dispatcher, yardmaster, or other personnel via communication devices.
  • Observe, interpret, and relay hand and lantern signals, and use radio communication.
  • Operate track switches and derails to change the route of trains.
  • Climb ladders on freight cars, operate hand brakes, couple and uncouple air hoses.
  • Inspect freight cars and monitor track conditions.
  • Get on and off equipment and ride moving cars by hanging on grab irons or ladders.
  • Judge and control the speed and clearance distance of cars.
  • Prepare required reports and read/interpret work orders and instructions.
  • Sit for extended periods, reach overhead to lift objects, and meet hearing and vision acuity standards.
