About The Position

Under the direction of the teacher for the visually impaired and the classroom teacher, the Braille Assistant provides individual or small group instruction to students with visual impairment to assist them in accessing curriculum and understanding instructional concepts. This role also involves assisting teaching staff with the preparation of classroom and teaching materials, utilizing and assisting in the use of specialized computers, software, and other braille devices. The Braille Assistant assists with the instruction and supervision of students who are severely visually impaired and provides mobility assistance as needed in various educational settings. A key responsibility is assisting students with utilizing Braille for instruction and providing braille transcribing support.

Requirements

  • Must be willing to learn Grade II UEB braille, taught on the job.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual or small group instruction to students with visual impairment to assist them in accessing curriculum and understanding instructional concepts.
  • Assist teaching staff with preparation of classroom and teaching materials.
  • Utilize and assist in use of specialized computers, software, and other braille devices.
  • Assist with the instruction and supervision of student who is severely visually impaired.
  • Supervise and provide mobility assistance for student as needed on playgrounds, at lunch time, field trips, and in other appropriate educational settings.
  • Assist student with utilizing Braille for instruction.
  • Provide braille transcribing support.
  • Assist with any other duties directed by the school administrators as they would relate to instruction of students.
