About The Position

The Boys Track & Field Head Coach is responsible for formulating objectives for the sport season, managing player personnel and assistant coaching responsibilities. This role requires staying current with new ideas and techniques through clinics, workshops, and reading, and encouraging assistant coaches to do the same. The coach must be knowledgeable of all rules and regulations concerning the sport and any changes that occur. Responsibilities also include inventory, selection, care, and maintenance of equipment, assisting the athletic director with athlete registration, fee collection, eligibility lists, and other reports. The coach must ensure all athletes have physicals, organize and schedule practice sessions to develop athletes' potential, and apply discipline in a firm and positive manner. They are expected to enforce facility regulations, conduct themselves and their teams ethically during practice and contests, and report contest outcomes to the media. Adherence to district rules regarding school bus transportation is required, as is direct supervision of dressing rooms and facilities. The coach must accompany the varsity team to away activities and be the first in attendance at home events, designate assistant coaches for junior varsity teams, and recommend student athletes for athletic letters and awards. Additionally, the coach will recommend facility improvements and work cooperatively with the athletic director on contest schedules, while maintaining records of team and individual accomplishments.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate objectives for the sport season as it would pertain to player personnel and assistant coaching responsibilities
  • Keep abreast of new ideas and techniques by attending clinics and workshops, reading in the field and encouraging assistant coaches to do the same
  • Be knowledgeable of rules and regulations concerning his/her sport and changes which occur
  • Inventory, selection, care and maintenance of equipment
  • Assist athletic director with proper registration of all athletes at beginning of the season
  • Collect necessary fees
  • Assist athletic director in compiling eligibility lists and other reports
  • Arrange for systematic issuance of school equipment
  • Make sure all athletes have physicals
  • Assume supervisory control over all phases of teams in the program
  • Organize and schedule practice sessions on a regular basis with the idea of developing the athlete’s greatest potential
  • Apply discipline in a firm and positive manner
  • See that facility regulations are understood and enforced
  • Conduct oneself and teams in an ethical manner during practice and in contests
  • Report outcomes of contests to the media
  • Adhere to the rules and regulations of the district regarding school bus transportation
  • Directly supervise, or designate a supervisor, of all dressing rooms and lock up facilities at the close of each practice or contest
  • Accompany the varsity team to all interscholastic away activities and the first in attendance at home events
  • Designate one or more assistant coaches to be responsible for the junior varsity teams
  • Recommend those student athletes who have fulfilled requirements for athletic letters, certificates or special awards
  • Recommend additions and/or improvements for the care and maintenance of facilities
  • Work cooperatively with athletic director in recommendations for upcoming contest schedules
  • Maintain records of team and individual accomplishments and submit a copy to the athletic director
