About The Position

The Head Coach will instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary to achieve individual and team success. This role also involves teaching students moral values, pride in accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence. The success of athletic programs significantly impacts the community's perception of the school system, and this position requires managing public exposure and community/parent pressure while prioritizing good sportsmanship and mental health. The role demands a significant time commitment, including evenings and weekends, and requires managing the physical risks of the sport through safety protocols and handling disciplinary or administrative challenges with fairness and discretion.

Requirements

Has a valid Illinois teacher certification.
Employed as a teacher or substitute teacher in District 187.
Substantial knowledge of the sport's technical aspects.
Must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.

Previous coaching experience in assigned sports is desirable.

Responsibilities

Teach students the formulation of moral values, pride in accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence.
Manage public exposure and community/parent pressure for winning performance, ensuring it does not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.
Effectively manage the inherent physical risks of the sport through rigorous safety protocols.
Navigate complex disciplinary or administrative challenges with fairness and discretion.
Implement all athletic policies approved by the District 187 Board of Education.
Consistently implement existing system, state, and league regulations.
Refer all student and parent requests or grievances to the Director of Athletics and Activities.
Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
Train and inform staff, and encourage professional growth by promoting clinic attendance.
Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, analyze staff effectiveness at the end of the season, and evaluate all assistants.
Maintain discipline, address grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program.
Advise, coordinate, and support a staff of high school and middle school coaches in conjunction with the Director of Athletics and Activities and the respective Principal.
Assist the Director of Athletics and Activities in scheduling and providing transportation to tournaments and special sports events.
Assist in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sports events or practices and adhere to scheduled facility times.
Coordinate programs with maintenance and school employees.
Provide documentation to the Athletic Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examination, parental consent, and eligibility.
Provide proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
Provide training rules and any other unique sports regulations to each athlete considered a participant.
Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant by being present at all practices, games, and while traveling.
Direct student managers and statisticians on respective teams.
Determine discipline and delineate due-process procedures when discipline enforcement is necessary.
Contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
Adhere to the rules and regulations of NFHS, IHSA, and School Board Policy for coach conduct, certifications, and protocols.
Collect the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.
Arrange for issuing and storing equipment and submit to the Director of Athletics and Activities an annual inventory and current records.
Recommend budgetary items for next year in the area of the program to the Director of Athletics and Activities.
Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices and authorize who may enter.
Permit athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility.
Be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment.
Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.
Assist the Director of Athletics and Activities in carrying out his/her responsibilities.
Make press releases and school announcements.
Instruct team members as to changes in the rules and teach fundamentals of the sport as outlined by the Director of Athletics and Activities.
Maintain a record of the team statistics and requirements for lettering.
Work within that sport's basic framework and philosophy of the Director of Athletics and Activities.
Attend all required meetings (staff, conference, IHSA, etc.) and carry out scouting assignments as outlined by the Director of Athletics and Activities.
Arrive early before practices, contests, and meetings to prepare adequately and remain long enough afterward to help players with problems or become involved in staff discussions.
Help in the planning and implementing of both in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
Never criticize, admonish, or argue with the Director of Athletics and Activities or any staff member in players' or parents' ears or eyes.
Strive to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources made available by the Director of Athletics and Activities.
Attend most of the contests, when possible, of other teams in the program.
Perform other duties that are consistent with the nature of the position and that may be requested by the Director of Athletics and Activities.
