About The Position

Waverly Community Schools is seeking a Boys Tennis Head Coach for the 2026-27 season. This position is located at Waverly High School and begins in August 2026. The salary is per the current WEA Master Agreement Schedule B, starting at $2589.90. The coach will be responsible for building the varsity tennis program, including recruitment of student athletes, and providing leadership to the entire tennis program. This role requires effective teaching and coaching of student athletes, motivation, planning, organization, and instruction of tennis fundamentals and techniques with a positive attitude. The coach must be able to instill, enforce, and provide fair and firm direction, operating within a character-based coaching system and a goal-oriented, outcome-based philosophy. Assistance to other tennis coaches, effective communication with varied backgrounds, and the ability to work without constant supervision, make decisions, and exercise good judgment are also key aspects of this position. Regular communication with the Athletic Director regarding goals, progress, and needs is expected. The coach will maintain a physically safe practice environment, plan effective practices, distribute monthly calendars to athletes and parents, maintain daily attendance records, monitor athletes' school attendance and grades, and coordinate teambuilding/bonding activities. Attendance at coaching clinics and willingness to attend summer camps are also required. Regular and on-time attendance is mandatory, along with performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma.
  • Experience coaching tennis athletes at the middle/high school level.
  • Broad knowledge base of sport and program development.
  • CPR Certification
  • Must have attended MHSAA Cap Program or willingness to attend.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.
  • Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to demonstrate the character traits of respect, responsibility, honesty, and caring when interacting with staff, students, and community members.

Responsibilities

  • Coach tennis at the high school level (MHSAA).
  • Build the varsity tennis program including recruitment of Waverly student athletes.
  • Effectively teach and coach student athletes.
  • Motivate athletes, plan, organize and teach fundamentals and techniques of tennis with a positive attitude.
  • Provide leadership to the entire tennis program.
  • Instill, enforce and provide fair and firm direction.
  • Assist other tennis coaches as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with people from varied social, educational and economic backgrounds.
  • Work without constant supervision, make decisions and have good judgment.
  • Communicate frequently with Athletic Director - goals, progress and needs.
