About The Position

This position involves instructing and coaching students in the sport of boys soccer. The role includes assisting with the arrangement of playing schedules and performing all associated coaching responsibilities. The coach is also required to attend all necessary meetings and trainings as specified by Oakland High School (OAL). All hires and work schedules are contingent upon student enrollment, sports sign-ups, and the season's sports schedules.

Requirements

• Fundamentals of Coaching (HIGH SCHOOL) certification (does not expire).
• Middle School Coaching certification (does not expire).
• Concussion in Sports certification (expires every 3 years).
• Sudden Cardiac Arrest certification (expires every 2 years).
• Heat Illness Prevention certification (expires every 2 years).
• CPR & FIRST AID certification from an instructor-led class (expires every 2 years).
• Provide written evidence indicating knowledge of the coaching theory and techniques in the sport (e.g., college coursework, prior coaching experience, prior participation at high school level, or in-service training).
• Knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport at the high school level.
• Knowledge of adolescent psychology as it relates to sports participation (college courses or prior active involvement with youth in school/community sports programs).
• Knowledge, skill, and ability sufficient to maintain high standards of safety in all aspects of coaching at practices and contests.
• Demonstrated high ethical standards related to sportsmanship, fair play, and relationships with students.
• Recognition of the need to communicate with parents/guardians and appropriate school staff regarding problems or emergencies.
• Knowledge of school policies and California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) policies related to athletics.
• Ability to meet the standards for the district’s athletic program, including instilling teamwork, commitment, and discipline.
• Ability to develop positive relations and support from parents and the community.
• Ability to offer academic encouragement and support to students.

Nice To Haves

• Preference will be given to current certificated employees of Oakland Unified School District who possess a valid CA teaching credential.
• Previous successful experiences coaching the sport at the level of the vacancy will be given additional weight in comparing candidates.
