About The Position

The Boys Camp Director at Camp Cherokee is responsible for assessing cabin counselor performance, training and developing staff, and ensuring the physical and emotional safety and enjoyment of male campers and staff. This role involves daily interaction with campers and staff, supervision during various camp activities, managing staff responsibilities, and maintaining communication with parents. The director also plays a key role in opening and closing day activities, program support, and ensuring the overall positive experience at camp.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or have completed at least two years of college.
  • Must be certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Must attend all pre-camp training, retreats, and opening training session.
  • Possess leadership qualities and ability to use sound judgment.
  • Good health, enthusiasm, individual maturity, moral character, team qualities, and communication skills.
  • Possess interest in the development of children.
  • Must be able to endure hot temperatures, physical exertion, manual labor, behavioral conflicts, and must be able to walk, run, and swim every day.
  • Endurance during prolonged activities, bending, stooping and lifting.
  • Ability to observe, manage and evaluate both staff members and campers.
  • Ensure that staff and camper morale are always in a positive manner.

Responsibilities

  • Assess cabin counselor performance daily to assure standards are maintained.
  • Train and develop staff members, providing feedback for continual growth.
  • Ensure male campers and staff are physically and emotionally safe and having fun.
  • Be present in cabin areas daily and interact with campers and staff at meals, programs, etc.
  • Conduct face checks to ensure cabins report promptly and all counselors and campers are present.
  • Provide direction to staff and campers not following rules.
  • Manage supervision during shower and devotional times.
  • Coordinate and supervise cabin night activity.
  • Manage "area duty" responsibilities of male staff members.
  • Collect and sort laundry after bridge weekends for all male campers and staff.
  • Provide feedback for effective growth and development of male staff members.
  • Conduct regular area meetings.
  • Lend support to male staff members after lights out in appropriate cabin areas.
  • Observe, correct, and evaluate male staff members concerning their interactions and leadership with campers.
  • Complete written evaluations of staff mid-season and end-of-season, verbally discussing them with each staff member.
  • Conduct cabin cleanliness checks on Opening and Closing Day of each session.
  • Make suggested camp counselor cabin assignments to the appropriate "camp" director.
  • Greet and accommodate parents as needed on Opening day.
  • Visit any camper or male staff member in the Health Center.
  • Check e-mails and voicemails daily, communicate directly with parents concerning their camper(s).
  • Contact parents of all first-year campers by Wednesday of each session.
  • Manage lost and found items and return them to their appropriate owner.
  • Assist other program staff when needed.
  • Assist Evening Program Director.
  • Plan and supervise campers and staff during "bridge" sessions.
  • Actively assist in "OD" responsibilities.
  • Assist in supervision during off-site trips.
  • Select an Honor Cabin at the end of each session and present it creatively at the closing banquet.
  • Deliver pre-sorted mail to cabins daily.
  • Identify and manage cabin supply needs.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as directed by the camp director team.
