About The Position

This application covers all Boys' Basketball coaching roles, including Head, Assistant, Sub-varsity (Junior Varsity and Freshman), and Intramural positions for the 2026-2027 school year, running from October to December. All coaching assignments are one-year contracts.

Requirements

All coaches of interscholastic activity programs who assume full responsibility for students under their direction at any level shall be either: A certified teacher or administrator holding a current certificate issued by the Colorado Department of Education; or Employed as a teacher, counselor, and or administrator at least 50% of the school day in a private school; or A registered volunteer with Canon City Schools.

Responsibilities

Develop good rapport with numerous individuals and community groups, including team personnel, the student body, professional staff, the community, spectators, officials, fellow coaches, media representatives, and parents of players.
Work cooperatively with the school athletic director, administration, other staff, team, and parents.
Embody diligence, enthusiasm, integrity, honesty, and a passion for the game.
Maintain exemplary personal appearance, including dress, physical condition, and other relevant factors.
Reflect positively on the public demeanor and decorum of the coach, team, athletic department, school, and community.
Implement and manage discipline among coaches, players, and support staff, serving as a model for the program.
Emphasize the desire to do well, win gracefully, and lose with poise and a positive attitude.
Motivate staff, players, and spectators to achieve established team and individual goals.
Take advantage of opportunities for self-improvement, including regular attendance at district meetings, rules clinics, special workshops, and training opportunities.
Maintain membership in professional organizations and coaches' associations.
Stay informed about current literature in professional journals, newspapers, magazines, and other media forms.
Use sound and acceptable teaching practices.
Run well-organized practice sessions.
Complete pre-season planning well in advance of the starting date.
Adhere to a highly efficient and technically sound program of injury prevention.
Follow a prescribed routine and maintain good communication with the patient, trainer, and parents when injuries occur.
Construct a well-organized game plan.
Develop a sound system for equipment accountability.
Keep assistant coaches, volunteers, student managers, and statisticians well-informed about their expectations.
Cooperate fully with building staff, other programs, media, support staff, and administration.
Cooperate fully with maintenance staff, transportation, and other individuals involved in supporting the program.
Promote and teach only ethical, aggressive, and fair play, while stressing good sportsmanship at all times.
Teach skills and techniques pertinent to the sport, and model and monitor behavior and academic performance on a continuous basis.
Aid in the development of the overall person.
Be fair and unbiased with players, and sensitive to individual differences, needs, interests, temperaments, attitudes, and tolerances.
Create confidence in the coach, the school, and the district through actions.
Give maximal effort and loyalty to the school at all times.
Strive for excellence throughout the program, department, and school.
Treat the faculty, staff, and student body with dignity and respect.
Support all endorsed activities of the school.
Urge the student body to be polite, courteous, and fair to all people involved in a contest.
Maintain a high level of discipline and expectations, being firm, fair, and consistent in enforcing those expectations.
Continue to pursue professional growth in both academic teaching and athletic coaching areas.
Encourage independent thought among all coaches and establish clear lines of communication to facilitate the exchange of ideas.
Discuss disagreements with fellow coaches privately and in a timely manner.
Communicate expectations clearly to assistant coaches in advance of the season.
Value and recognize assistant coaches appropriately for their contributions.
Support, promote, and cooperate with all other coaches and activity sponsors for the overall well-being of the athletic program.
Communicate regularly with athletes and their families about off-season schedules to allow athletes to participate in a wide variety of activities.
Support and cooperate with other coaches whenever possible.
Reflect confidence in one’s fellow coaches.
Maintain a strong, harmonious interpersonal relationship with other faculty members.
Cooperate with every faculty member.
Allow athletes to make up a test or homework during practice time when collaborating with academic teachers.
Maintain the practice area and locker rooms in a clean and orderly state.
Store equipment and use equipment properly.
Keep locker rooms and storage areas locked.
File proper maintenance requests for large items of need.
Demonstrate pride in the equipment and facilities.
