About The Position

The Botanical Art Registration Intern position, funded by the Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Science Initiative, offers students aspiring to work in museums hands-on experience with art registration professionals. The primary goal is to complete a physical and digital inventory of the Botanical Study Collection, with opportunities to work with TMS and handle collection materials. The ideal candidate is proactive, highly organized, and comfortable in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This is a 9-week, part-time opportunity from June 1 – July 31, suitable for individuals interested in Museum Registration or Collections Management. The intern will demonstrate experience working with diverse populations using an inclusive and accessible approach.

Requirements

  • Must be a current university student (18+) or recent graduate (1 year max) whose field of study aligns with this interest opportunity.
  • Interest in museum collection care and exhibitions.
  • Professional attitude and appearance.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Interest in Huntington Collections.
  • Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students (minimum age 18) whose field of study aligns with the internship opportunity.
  • This internship is available to Los Angeles area residents.
  • The Huntington will not sponsor J-1 visas for internship participants at this time.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in internship programming led by the Internship Coordinator.
  • Assist the Associate Registrar for Botanical Art in completing inventories for an upcoming viewing stone exhibition.
  • Create and update database records as needed.
  • Handle artworks, enter data into The Museum System (TMS), photographically document artworks, and create/update physical object files.
  • Evaluate object packing and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Create digital asset management systems (DAMS) packages for curatorial review.
  • Attend meetings with the Botanical Art Curators.
  • Handle artwork following training by Preservation and under supervision of a registrar.
  • Gain exposure through one-on-ones and shadowing other areas of Registration (Permanent Collections, Loans and Exhibitions) and unique Registration specializations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
