About The Position

Universal Rail Solutions Inc. is seeking a Boom Truck Driver/Operator to support railway construction, maintenance, signal installation, and material handling activities across Canada. In this role, you'll play a key part in ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. As a Boom Truck Driver, you will work as part of a skilled railway construction and maintenance team, safely operating truck-mounted hydraulic cranes to move materials, equipment, and infrastructure components within active rail environments. This role is critical to supporting rail construction, signal and communications installations, track renewal projects, and material distribution activities while maintaining strict compliance with railway operating rules and company safety standards. This position is more than equipment operation — it's about supporting safe, efficient project execution and helping keep Canada's railways moving.

Requirements

  • Minimum 6 months of railway or construction industry experience
  • Minimum one season of equipment operating experience
  • Valid Class 1 Driver's Licence required for boom truck operation
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety requirements and safe lifting practices
  • Ability to safely and responsibly operate boom trucks and related equipment
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities
  • Experience using basic hand tools, including: Wrenches, Pliers, Screwdrivers
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good customer service and public interaction skills
  • Strong hand-eye coordination and situational awareness
  • Self-motivated with a strong commitment to safety
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted
  • Ability to work rotational schedules, night shifts, overtime, and travel as required

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma or equivalent (considered an asset)
  • Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) certification, or willingness to obtain
  • Clean driver's abstract and clear criminal record are considered assets
  • First Aid, Fall Arrest, GEI, Forklift Loader, and machine-specific certifications are considered assets (training may be provided)

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate boom trucks to lift, move, load, and unload materials and equipment at railway construction and maintenance sites
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and safe work practices
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections and complete pre-trip and post-trip walk-around assessments
  • Perform general housekeeping and minor maintenance to ensure equipment remains in safe operating condition
  • Complete daily administrative requirements, including: Log books, Job briefings, Equipment documentation, Inspection reports
  • Comply with Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) and all applicable railway instructions
  • Communicate effectively with crews, supervisors, and railway personnel using established radio protocols
  • Assist with manual labour and general railway construction activities when required
  • Meet productivity and performance expectations established by Supervisors and Foremen
  • Protect fellow employees, the public, and company assets through safe work practices
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
