About The Position

The Friends of the Marion Public Library is seeking volunteers to assist in the Bookstore. This is a core volunteer role focused on serving customers and maintaining the Bookstore during library operating hours. Additional opportunities may arise for events such as book sales, bake sales, or farmers markets. Responsibilities include operating the cash register and credit card terminal for sales, responding to inquiries about the Friends of Marion Public Library and donation procedures, and receiving book donations.

  • Enjoy working independently as well as with others.
  • Some experience with customer service.
  • Desire for interaction with library patrons and community members.
  • Comfortable using a register (training provided).
  • Comfortable asking for help.
  • Love the Marion Public Library!
  • Possess patience, flexibility, and curiosity.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to follow directions.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Basic computer skills (ability to communicate via email and text, and use scheduling app).
  • Ability to keep confidential all information learned while volunteering.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, reach, stand, push, pull as required.
  • Physical agility, strength, and dexterity necessary for handling library materials, including retrieving, shelving, lifting, and moving.
  • Ability to lift up to and push 35 pounds.
  • Pass a Criminal Background Check.
  • Pass a Sex Offender Registry Check.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the register and credit card terminal for sales.
  • Answer inquiries about the Friends of Marion Public Library and donation procedures.
  • Receive book donations.
  • Serve customers and maintain the Bookstore during library operating hours.
  • Assist with events such as book sales, bake sales, or farmers markets.
