Boilermaker

Wood•Savannah, GA

About The Position

Assemble and repair boilers, tanks, vats, and pressure vessels, as well as boiler auxiliaries and ancillary equipment, according to specifications using power tools, rigging equipment, and hand tools. The role includes fabricating, fitting, aligning, welding, and repairing vessel and boiler components, assisting with pressure testing, and following safety and project rules.

Requirements

  • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
  • Apply shop mathematics to solve problems.
  • Plan work and select proper tools.
  • Compare and identify differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
  • Visualize three-dimensional objects from plans and drawings.
  • Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
  • Work at heights without fear.

Responsibilities

  • Locate and mark reference points for columns or plates on foundations using measuring and layout tools and geometric knowledge.
  • Attach rigging or signal crane operators to lift components into position.
  • Align structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frames, tanks, and vats using plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs, or turnbuckles.
  • Hammer, flame-cut, file, or grind irregular edges to fit sections and structural parts together.
  • Bolt or arc-weld structures and sections together; position drums and headers in supports and bolt or weld supports to frames.
  • Align water tubes and connect and expand their ends to drums and headers using a tube expander.
  • Bolt or weld casing sections, uptakes, stacks, baffles, and fabricated parts such as chutes, air heaters, fan stands, feeding tubes, catwalks, ladders, coal hoppers, and safety hatches to frames.
  • Perform minor maintenance and cleaning activities using tools and equipment.
  • Install manholes, handholds, valves, gauges, and feed-water connections in drums to complete water-tube boiler assemblies.
  • Assist in testing assembled vessels by pumping water or gas into them under specified pressure and observing instruments for evidence of leakage.
  • Repair boilers or tanks in the field by removing defective sections or tubes, straightening plates, installing new tubes and sections, welding, and replacing worn bolt lugs.
  • May fasten and caulk vessel sections using pneumatic fasteners and caulking hammers.
  • May line fireboxes with refractory brick and blocks.
  • May fabricate stacks, uptakes, chutes, and other parts to adapt boilers to installation sites.
  • Use flame-cutting techniques and demonstrate knowledge of torch use.
  • Observe and comply with all safety and project rules.
