About The Position

Under indirect supervision of the Lead Utility Plant Engineer, the Boiler Operator is responsible for monitoring, operating, troubleshooting, and performing preventive and corrective maintenance on all equipment associated with high-pressure steam boilers. This role ensures the uninterrupted, efficient, safe, and economical operation of all equipment. The position also involves performing other related work as assigned and demonstrating behaviors that reflect the mission and core values of UC Health. The Boiler Operator will monitor and record gauge and graph readings for major and auxiliary equipment, including steam boilers, water softeners, air compressors, and fire protection systems. They will also monitor the operation of auxiliary and major hospital equipment to ensure uninterrupted service, perform ongoing preventive and corrective maintenance, and check the proper operation of the electrical management system and generators. Monitoring of medical gas pressures throughout the facility complex is also a key responsibility, with notification to the Director of Facilities for any issues related to the medical gas system.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field or 4 years of experience in lieu of Associates Degree.
  • Actively licensed Ohio Stationary Engineer
  • Actively licensed Ohio High Pressure Boiler Operator
  • 2 Years equivalent experience

Nice To Haves

  • 5 Years equivalent experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and records gauge and graph readings and assorted data of all major and auxiliary equipment, including but not limited to high-pressure steam boilers, water softeners, air compressors, fire protection systems, associated pumps and motors, etc.
  • Monitors the operation of all auxiliary and major hospital equipment to assure uninterrupted operation.
  • Performs ongoing preventive and corrective maintenance as scheduled or assigned of all systems and equipment by exercising and displaying accuracy in cleaning, inspecting, aligning, measuring, installing and repairing these systems and equipment.
  • Checks for proper operation of electrical management system and ensures generators and ATS operate as needed by monitoring the Power Logic System.
  • Monitors medical gas pressures throughout facility complex.
  • Notifies the Director of Facilities of any problems related to the medical gas system.
  • Provides quality workmanship relating to co-workers and management's needs as described by way of work orders or described in preventive maintenance schedule.
  • Records gas, electric and water usage from meters, and steam production.
  • Receives all calls for routine and emergency service, including second and third shift, weekends and holidays. Dispatches calls to the appropriate Facilities staff on duty in a timely manner and produces necessary work orders.
  • Performs prescribed chemical tests, evaluates the results and administers the chemical treatment to maintain published limitations of chemical concentrations.
  • Responds to emergency call-ins and adapts to changes in the work environment/detail.
  • Assembles carts, shelving, and other equipment as assigned.
  • Maintains an effective standard of safety and cleanliness of Drake Center and its equipment by exercising all the rules governing the use of protective clothing, application of tools, handling of chemicals, and machinery operation.
  • Cleans work area after the completion of each job or at the end of each shift.
  • Completes work order and PM work order documentation at the end of each shift in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Responsible for maintaining the Utility Plant storeroom organization and cleanliness.
  • Performs Utility Plant inventory counts in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining inventory par levels to ensure proper supply levels and avoid against stock shortages/outages.
  • Receives and checks Utility Plant orders for accuracy, stocks to shelves and/or dispenses material/equipment for appropriate use.
  • Requests materials/equipment needed through submission of a written requisition identifying items to be ordered.
  • Essential personnel subject to all code gray and code yellow status.
  • Solicits and provides quotes within trade area for materials as needed.
  • Maintains adequate and current inventory of parts and supplies needed within trade area.
  • Coordinates with user departments with prior, clear and adequate communication and notice for planned and unscheduled services disruption and equipment maintenance.
  • Prepares and submits for approval requisition/purchase orders for parts and supplies needed within trade area.
  • Encourages and provides to the Director of Facilities suggested areas of improvements: process efficiencies and cost avoidance proposals.
  • Supports and adheres to all policies and procedures.
  • Supports and adheres to all facilities Department’s Rules and Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist and provides support to any members of the Facilities team as requested and needed to resolve work repairs.
  • Completes tasks or otherwise requested by the Director of Facilities or any other executive or senior member of the management team.
