About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Administration is seeking applicants for a Boiler Operator for our Facility Management division. The primary mission of Facility Management is to provide a Safe and healthful work environment for employees and the public in a cost effective and energy efficient manner. This mission is accomplished by performing routine, preventative, and emergency maintenance to state facilities owned by and allocated to the Department of Administration. This position is responsible for manning an 8-hour rotational shift. The applicant will maintain a continues vigil and take all steps necessary to maintain a steam output that will meet total demand. This position requires a thorough working knowledge of fuel oil and gas boilers. This position will provide a suitable environment for the state government complex in Raleigh by means of steam necessary to meet demand and maintenance and repair of steam plant boilers and equipment. The work affects the efficient operation of complete steam plant; could affect the comfort and safe heating of state buildings.

Requirements

  • One year of progressive experience in the performance of tasks associated with mechanical maintenance or boiler operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be able to react to change loads in demand as required, including during emergencies.
  • Familiar with building, life and safety codes.
  • Must be capable of strenuous lifting, crawling and working at heights up to sixty-five feet or more.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time and perform manual labor.

Nice To Haves

  • Thorough working knowledge of fuel oil and gas boilers.

Responsibilities

  • Maintenance and repair of boilers, air compressors, steam traps, and blowers.
  • Monitor load demands and starts of shut down respective boilers to maintain the required steam output needed throughout the State Government Complex.
  • Ensure all controls, feed water, draft, etc., are maintained for optimum plant operation.
  • React to change loads in demand as required, including during emergencies.
  • Monitor chemical feed systems for water treatment and make necessary tests and adjustments to ensure correct chemical levels are being produced.
