About The Position

Under direction, operates and makes minor repairs to stationary steam boilers or steam generators and auxiliary boiler equipment. This role involves managing boilers with varying safety valve settings and horsepower ratings, working under the supervision of a licensed engineer. The position requires performing related work as needed.

Requirements

Must possess a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of the appropriate type (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
Knowledge of the varied types of machines and equipment used in a power plant and in a high-pressure heating plant, including supplies, materials, and tools used in lubricating and cleaning machinery and equipment.
Knowledge of the problems, methods, and techniques used in repairing, maintaining, and installing grate units, tubes, and caps and in turbining boilers.
Knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of firing stationary boilers and the varied types of stokers and their operation, including safety devices and measures.
Knowledge of the proper levels for water in boilers for safety and efficient operation.
Knowledge of the problems, procedures, and methods used in maintaining fires at the proper thickness and regulating drafts for efficient results.
Knowledge of the methods, supplies, and materials used in washing and cleaning boiler and pump rooms.
Knowledge of the methods used in obtaining, storing, safeguarding, and properly using equipment, materials, and supplies.
Knowledge of maintaining records and files showing results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow.
Ability to analyze steam boiler equipment operation and maintenance problems, organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.
Ability to fire stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to turbines and other steam-powered equipment.
Ability to fuel boilers by regulating automatic stokers, hand firing, and regulating oil flow in oil burners.
Ability to control operations of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges.
Ability to maintain water in boilers at needed levels and regulate draft for required results.
Ability to inspect and check safety devices and units and keep machinery and equipment properly cleaned and lubricated.
Ability to repair, maintain, and install tubes, caps, and grate units and in turbining boilers.
Ability to take and record instrument readings on log sheets.
Ability to maintain boiler and pump areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
Ability to prepare and maintain records and files showing results of systematic readings of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
Must be legally authorized to work in the US.
Must establish residency in the State of New Jersey (NJ First Act).

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Responsibilities

Fires stationary boilers used in generating power to supply steam to heating plants, turbines, and other steam powered equipment.
Fuels boilers by regulating automatic stokers, hand firing, and regulating the flow of oil in oil burners.
Manipulates valves to control the operation of feed pump governors and pressure control gauges.
Ensures water is maintained in the boiler at the required level.
Maintains fires in boilers at the proper thickness and regulates draft for efficient results.
Performs repair, maintenance, and installation of grate units, tubes, and caps, and turbining boilers.
Measures and records fuel usage.
Washes boiler and pump rooms and maintains these areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
Makes emergency repairs to keep machines and equipment in good operating condition.
Performs simple tests of boiler water to determine hardness, acidity, and alkalinity, and may operate boiler water conditioning apparatus.
Obtains, stores, safeguards, and properly uses equipment, materials, and supplies.
Keeps essential records and files of fuel consumption, pressure, draft conditions, temperature, and steam flow.
May operate and maintain air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
Sweeps and cleans furnace rooms, keeps flues clean, and manages trash.
Becomes familiar with the normal operations of blowers, motors, and regulators and reports any abnormalities.
Reports breakage or damage to furnaces or heaters promptly.
Notifies appropriate individuals if operations are interfered with.
Reports when fuel supply is running low.
Adjusts drafts, oils pumps, electric motors, and other boiler room equipment.
Performs cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing floors, cleaning walls and ceilings, dusting furniture, polishing metal work, and cleaning woodwork, windows, and lavatories at the end of the firing season.
Makes minor repairs, cuts and trims grass and shrubbery, and acts as a watchman.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems.
