About The Position

This role involves shift work to operate and maintain high-pressure central boilers. The Boiler Operator performs preventive and corrective maintenance on boilers and their auxiliary equipment. The supervisor for this position is the Lead Shift Engineer.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of high pressure boilers.
  • Possession of a blue seal for steam.
  • Minimum of three years of experience with high pressure boilers.
  • Familiarity with basic energy management principles and operation.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Must possess or obtain a "C" operator license for underground storage tanks within 12 months.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to troubleshoot boilers and auxiliary equipment.
  • NJ Journeyman electrical license.

Responsibilities

  • Operates the central boilers during an assigned shift, including igniting burners, inspecting and maintaining chemical and feedwater systems, monitoring controls, and recording readings.
  • Meets steam demand for various loads and conditions.
  • Reads and records selected temperatures, pressures, flow rates, chemical concentrations, plume discharge, and other parameters in a permanent log.
  • Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on boilers and auxiliary equipment (pumps, aerators, expansion tank, valves, gauges, etc.).
  • Monitors energy management systems (CSI & ALC) and manipulates settings for temporary corrective actions.
  • Maintains a log of all actions performed within the energy management system.
  • Adheres to safety procedures and ensures work conforms with local building and safety codes.
  • Works off ladders and scaffolding occasionally.
  • Lifts at least 50 pounds of supplies, material, and equipment.
  • Communicates effectively with other tradesmen, vendors, students, and building occupants.
  • Receives and investigates trouble and emergency calls after normal work hours, ensuring boiler operation is not jeopardized.
  • Calls in a tradesman if a problem cannot be solved independently.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of major problems by logging events clearly and legibly.
  • Receives supplies and deliveries for the department after normal work hours.
  • Sweeps, vacuums, and cleans the office area and work floor after completion of shift.
  • Maintains tools and test equipment to be clean, operable, and properly stored.
  • Performs other routine tasks as directed by the supervisor.
