About The Position

The Production Department at The New School’s College of Performing Arts is seeking a highly qualified Overhire Board Operator to join its team. Reporting to the Audio & Video Supervisor, the Overhire Board Operator is directly responsible for supporting the audio and video needs of academic related performances and partner events across the College of Performing Arts. The Overhire Board Operator is responsible for projection, video, and audio systems during theatrical productions where live mixing is not required. The Overhire Board Operator takes cues from stage management and implements the designs of the Sound Designer and/or the Projection Designer when required. This is an overhire position without regular or guaranteed weekly hours. Opportunities for work will be scheduled on an as-needed basis by the Audio & Video department. This position may be renewed pending institutional need and availability of funding.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of Qlab 5, Isadora, Millumin, Watchout, or other projection software.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a live sound engineer for concerts, corporate events or theater
  • Excellent knowledge of proper gain structure and video signal flow in theatrical systems
  • Working knowledge of audio related software, such as Wireless Workbench 6, Dante Virtual Soundcard, Dante Controller, etc.
  • Knowledge of projection mapping
  • Ability to interpret event technical documents including technical riders, signal flow diagrams, input lists, ground plans, run-of-show, and cue lists.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, organization, and time-management skills
  • Ability to communicate with departmental leadership and designers to ensure successful productions
  • Punctuality, professionalism, and a positive collaborative attitude when working with students, faculty, and staff

Nice To Haves

  • Corporate, Special Events, Festival Sound, and Broadcast experience are all plusses
  • Self-motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to safely climb ladders and scaffolding, operate Genies, and comfortable working at heights
  • Working knowledge of digital audio consoles, specifically, Yamaha, Allen & Heath, Midas, and Behringer

Responsibilities

  • Take cues from stage management during tech and performances of drama shows, including through Qlab
  • Assist in programming of video content when necessary using Qlab, Watchout, Millumin, Isadora, or other software to be disclosed ahead once confirmed with the designer
  • Understand and execute the technical aspects of each design, including interpreting audio and video needs and all signal flow plans, I/O lists, and ground plans
  • Setup, place, patch, and test all microphones and speakers according to the sound designer’s specifications
  • Provide professional, courteous service to all parties
  • Fulfill the role of System Tech and Console Operator
  • Setup, operate, and strike equipment before, during, and after events; including projectors, cameras, audio consoles, playback support systems, and any other audio or video related gear as required
  • Direct any technicians, Assistant Stage Managers, or other stagecrew members under their supervision in the completion of any required tasks, providing guidance when necessary to deliver the University’s standard
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned
