About The Position

The Stop Community Food Centre is seeking three individuals to join its Board of Directors. These individuals will bring expertise, dedication, lived experience, and vision to the organization. The Stop is specifically seeking people with a range of qualifications and interests, including but not limited to Human Resources, Legal, Development (Fundraising), and Board Governance, as well as familiarity with The Stop and ideally, previous board experience. As a community-based grassroots organization, applications are encouraged from a diverse group, particularly those residing in the neighbourhoods surrounding The Stop’s three locations. The Stop’s Board of Directors is a governance Board. Directors are expected to attend quarterly Board meetings, participate in the work of at least one Committee of the Board between Board meetings, and commit to serving a three-year term, with an opportunity to renew for a second three-year term.

Requirements

  • Expertise, dedication, lived experience, and vision
  • Qualifications and interests in Human Resources, Legal, Development (Fundraising), and Board Governance
  • Familiarity with The Stop
  • Previous board experience (ideal)
  • Residing in the neighbourhoods surrounding The Stop’s three locations (encouraged)
  • Commitment to serving a three-year term, with an opportunity to renew for a second three-year term
  • Ability to attend quarterly Board meetings (4:00p - 8:00p), the Annual General Meeting, and meetings of at least one Committee of the Board
  • Ability to prepare for Board and Committee meetings by reviewing materials, financials, and committee reports
  • Familiarity with activities of The Stop and the larger food security and social services sector in Toronto and further afield
  • Ability to build collaborative working relationships with fellow Board members and the Executive Director
  • Willingness to be a donor, participate in fundraising activities and volunteer to occasionally assist in program delivery
  • Willingness to actively recruit support for the Stop from personal and professional networks
  • Willingness to be a resource for the Executive Director, or their designate, when called upon to provide particular expertise

Responsibilities

  • Act with fiduciary responsibility, exercising due diligence in all decision-making, upholding the organization’s bylaws and always operating in the best interests of the organization.
  • Regular attendance at quarterly Board meetings (4:00p - 8:00p), the Annual General Meeting, and meetings of at least one Committee of the Board.
  • Prepare for each Board and Committee meeting, including a thorough review of all materials, financials, and committee reports to ensure informed decision-making.
  • Familiarity with activities of The Stop and the larger food security and social services sector in Toronto and further afield.
  • Build collaborative working relationships with fellow Board members and the Executive Director.
  • Be a donor, participate in fundraising activities and volunteer to occasionally assist in program delivery.
  • Actively recruit support for the Stop from personal and professional networks.
  • Be a resource for the Executive Director, or their designate, when called upon to provide particular expertise.
