About The Position

Compass Charter School is seeking dedicated and mission-aligned individuals to serve on its Board of Trustees. The board recruits two types of members: voting members, who hold full governance authority and fiduciary responsibility, and nonvoting family/parent members, who contribute the family perspective. All prospective board members undergo a structured process to ensure a strong fit, transparency, and compliance with New York State Education Department (NYSED) requirements. Voting members are subject to NYSED approval prior to appointment and serve two-year terms. The process involves nomination, application, vetting by current board members and the School Leader, a board vote, and final NYSED approval, which includes background checks and educational verification.

Requirements

Nomination by a current member of the Board of Trustees.
Completion of an application including a resume, curriculum vitae or summary of relevant professional background, and a personal statement.
Meeting with at least two current board members and the School Leader.
Successful completion of a board vote.
NYSED approval, which includes completing a Background Information Form, signed Statement of Assurance, and Disclosure of Financial Interest form.
Providing a resume and documentation of highest level of education (diploma and official transcript, or a notarized letter if unavailable).
Passing a criminal history record check via fingerprinting.
Verification of the accuracy of any credentials presented.
Alignment with Compass's mission and values.
Relevant skills and expertise.
Commitment to the responsibilities of board service.

Responsibilities

Attend and actively participate in all regularly scheduled board meetings.
Uphold Compass's mission, values, and commitment to progressive, sustainability-focused education.
Maintain confidentiality of executive session discussions.
Disclose any conflicts of interest promptly and recuse when appropriate.
Complete any required board training.
Act in the best interest of Compass students and the school community as a whole.
Speak to a candidate's fit for the role during the nomination process (for nominating board members).
Complete an application including a resume, curriculum vitae or summary of relevant professional background, and a personal statement.
Meet with at least two current board members and the School Leader for vetting conversations.
Undergo a criminal history record check via fingerprinting.
Verify the accuracy of any credentials presented.
