About The Position

ACCESS REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE is seeking a Board Member to uphold and ensure the mission of ACCESS RJ is continually achieved. This role involves ensuring effective organizational planning, actively participating in big-picture strategizing, and assisting in monitoring the plan’s goals. The Board Member will ensure ACCESS RJ is adequately resourced to accomplish its mission and meet its goals, provide prudent financial oversight (including approving the annual budget, establishing proper financial controls, and identifying and mitigating potential risks), and ensure legal compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. The Board Member will install the Executive Director and provide the support necessary to further the goals of the organization, and ensure that they are effective in their roles. Additionally, the role includes evaluating the work of the Board and ED, recruiting and orienting new Board members, serving as ACCESS RJ ambassadors by clearly articulating the mission, accomplishments, and goals, and upholding organizational values and frameworks in all matters. Board members are expected to live in California due to the statewide nature of the organization. Commitments include understanding and supporting ACCESS RJ’s mission, vision, values, policies, programs, and needs; understanding the organization’s financial statements; serving as active advocates and ambassadors; identifying and securing financial resources and partnerships; attending quarterly full Board meetings and more frequent committee meetings, reading assigned materials, and reaching out in case of absence; joining at least one Board committee; responding to Board emails within one week; attending one ACCESS RJ event biannually; participating in one continuing education biannually; participating in outreach and fundraising activities; and making or raising an annual contribution that is personally significant. Maintaining confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization is also required.

  • Interest in developing and teaching skills in the spirit of learning and collaboration

  • Flexibility and a strong ability to work collaboratively with a creative problem-solving approach

  • Serve as ACCESS RJ ambassadors - clearly articulating the mission, accomplishments, and goals
  • Uphold organizational values and frameworks in all matters
  • Understand and support ACCESS RJ’s mission, vision, values, policies, programs, and needs
  • Understand the organization’s financial statements, asking for clarity to understand when statements are unclear
  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization
  • Identify and secure the financial resources and partnerships necessary for the organization to advance its work. Leverage connections where they’re helpful
  • Be present at quarterly full Board meetings and more frequent committee meetings. Read the assigned materials beforehand and ask questions as they arise. Reach out to Board Partner and/or read meeting notes in case of an absence
  • Join at least one Board committee, and participate in committee meetings as scheduled
  • Respond to Board emails within one week of receipt (for non-time-sensitive matters)
  • Attend one ACCESS RJ event biannually in person or virtually (e.g. a social event, a fundraiser, an educational event)
  • Participate in one continuing education biannually to develop and enhance skills and knowledge of Board processes and roles (e.g. Nonprofit Lab webinar, etc)
  • Participate in outreach and fundraising activities for ACCESS RJ as directed by the Staff and Events committee
  • Make or raise an annual contribution (financial or in-kind) that is personally significant (no fixed amount)
  • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of the organization
