About The Position

The Blacksmith–Welder in Charge is a senior-level, skilled position within the Electric Repair Center responsible for performing complex welding, fabrication, and repair work on a wide range of utility equipment and components. In addition to journeyman-level responsibilities, this role serves as a lead worker (“in charge”), providing direction, coordination, and oversight of work activities when assigned, including when working off-site or in the absence of a foreman or supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship or equivalent experience as a Blacksmith/Welder.
  • Demonstrated journeyman-level proficiency in welding, fabrication, and metal repair.
  • Must hold current GTAW, SMAW, GMAW/FCAW, and Torch Brazing certification
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Must meet driver qualification requirements under FMCSR Parts 382 and 391 and either currently hold or be able to obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), including a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate, within six months of hire.
  • This position is subject to the Department of Transportation (DOT) random drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home as business needs require.
  • Must be willing to respond to callouts and work overtime as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced welding, cutting, heating, and metal fabrication using a variety of methods (e.g., arc, MIG, TIG, oxy-fuel).
  • Repair, rebuild, and fabricate components used in electric utility systems, including structural and specialty equipment.
  • Operate shop equipment such as presses, shears, brakes, and other fabrication tools used within the ERC.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of assigned employees on specific jobs or projects.
  • Serve as the designated “in charge” employee on off-site assignments or when multiple employees are assigned to a job.
  • Ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with established procedures and quality expectations.
  • Communicate job expectations, work sequencing, and safety requirements to crew members.
  • Plan and organize work activities within assigned scope.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications.
  • Follow all company safety rules, OSHA requirements, and applicable work procedures.
