About The Position

The Prep Cook will follow the direction of the Kitchen Manager and the Food Services Director. They will prepare all meals according to the recipes and directions provided. They may assist at times with meal prep for the Retreat Center and accompany the Kitchen Manager to/from the Retreat Center.

Requirements

  • Exhibit good judgment, honesty, integrity, responsibility and punctuality.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in a professional manner, both orally and written.
  • Ability to train staff and volunteers to complete assigned duties.
  • Willing to follow department guidelines and expectations plus be able to communicate and train the staff to the same level.
  • Flexibility in schedule and strong people skills.
  • Be Food Handlers certified or Manager ServSafe certified within 30 days of employment. To be determined by the Kitchen Manager at the time of hire.
  • Have the ability to work in a timely manner.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds, bend and twist.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to make decisions in the event of the absence of the Kitchen Manager.
  • Knowledge of kitchen equipment and operations.
  • Ability to be follow direction.
  • Complete understanding of menus and recipes.
  • Have the knowledge and the ability to temp foods accordingly.
  • Have the knowledge of what size of serving utensils will be needed at the time of serving.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a neat and orderly kitchen that passes Food Services Director inspections/checklists and all Health Department inspections.
  • Work with staff and volunteers that are part of all meal programs.
  • Assist with inventory management including ordering, receiving, monthly inventory, food waste and product rotation.
  • Assist with the proper training of all staff and volunteers.
  • Assist with the preparation of all assigned meals and caterings.
  • Maintain a clean and properly functioning kitchen by keeping a maintenance/cleaning program in place for equipment and areas.
  • Perform miscellaneous job related duties as assigned by the Kitchen Manager.
  • Assist the Kitchen Manager with kitchen-related duties including cash management and all other functions.
  • Follow the direction and guidance of the Kitchen Manager and/or Food Services Director.
  • Help perform the Kitchen Manager’s duties in the event of the Kitchen Manager’s absence.
  • Assist with planning and kitchen operations at the James River Retreat Center. May travel and lodge at Retreat Center during such events.
  • Follow directions from the Kitchen Manager and the Director of Food Services.
  • Receive deliveries and review the order form for accuracies.
