About The Position

The Biotechnology Program at Utah Tech University is launching three new programs in the 2026–27 academic year: the B.S. in Biotechnology, the BioLaunch program, and the M.S. in Genomics. This full-time, year-round Laboratory Coordinator position will support laboratory operations across these programs. Key responsibilities include assisting BioLaunch student teams with lab access, experimental techniques, and project development, supporting faculty and students in Innovative-Based Learning laboratory courses, and maintaining cell culture lines used across all programs. The successful candidate will report to the Biotechnology program coordinator, collaborate with faculty, students, and industry partners to maintain a safe, well-equipped laboratory environment and ensure students have the training and resources needed for coursework and research success. This position offers an opportunity to contribute to the growth of new biotechnology programs while preparing students for careers in biotechnology, biomedical research, and related fields.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a closely related discipline from an accredited college or university, along with hands-on experience in mammalian cell culture, is required.
  • Teaching or training experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations as they pertain to biology laboratory work.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to work with and assist faculty and student teaching assistants.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • An eagerness to engage with colleagues, staff, and administrators to develop ways to improve the educational experience of UT students.

Nice To Haves

  • A Master’s degree in Biology or a closely related discipline from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • Experience in cell culture techniques, particularly mammalian cell lines is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with primary cells, stem cells, or 3D culture systems (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and expand cell lines (have to work during weekend as needed).
  • Perform aseptic technique, passaging, cryopreservation, and thawing.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot contamination (bacterial, fungal, mycoplasma).
  • Support transfection, viral transduction, and other cell-based assays.
  • Prepare media, reagents, and maintain cell culture documentation.
  • Assist with experimental procedures including viability assays, microscopy, and molecular analyses.
  • Coordinate Laboratory operations in the biotechnology program with the support of faculty & other lab coordinators.
  • Maintain supplies, lab ware, and instruments essential to the operation of BioLaunch and the Innovative-Based Learning lab(s).
  • Maintain equipment including biosafety cabinets, CO2 incubators, centrifuges, and microscopes.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance and service schedules.
  • Organize freezer storage and biological sample tracking.
  • Keep accurate records and analyze and report relevant data.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Work with department faculty to maintain a safe and productive laboratory environment.
  • Attend department meetings; work with other faculty and staff in program management and adhere to university policies.
  • Opportunity to Instruct select labs, with additional compensation.
  • Work with Department Chair, Dean, Biotechnology program coordinator and other faculty in the Biological Sciences department on curriculum and program development.
