About The Position

The Biorepository Operations Technician is responsible for the receipt, accessioning, processing, storage, and distribution of human biospecimens in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), and regulatory requirements. This role requires a strong foundation in laboratory operations combined with hands-on logistics experience to ensure chain-of-custody integrity, timely specimen tracking, and the accurate maintenance of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) as well as the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system. Requirements

  • High School Diploma OR Associate's degree in Life Sciences related area
  • Minimum 1–2 years of hands-on experience in a life sciences operations environment
  • Demonstrated experience with specimen accessioning, LIMS data entry, and biological sample handling
  • Working knowledge of logistics and shipping processes
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs and stand for extended periods; comfort in working with products at cryogenic temperatures with proper PPE

Responsibilities

  • Receive biospecimens including frozen, fixed, or fresh solid and liquid samples or other client products in a timely manner
  • Accession samples and appropriate data in the laboratories electronic data management system
  • Document sample information in laboratory database from source documents
  • Record sample quality concerns and provide feedback to team members or supervisor
  • Pull samples from inventory when requested by scientists for internal or external projects
  • Prepare samples for shipment to appropriate client or vendors
  • Maintain and organize inventory/supplies/ equipment
  • Ensure compliance with best practice guidelines, laboratory and EHS protocols, company standards and policies, standard operating procedures (SOP), and industry regulations.
  • Attend and participate in ABS Inc. meetings and events, as directed
  • Provide support with ABS Inc. onsite operations, as directed
  • Respond to ABS Inc. email correspondence and requests, as directed
  • Support overall shipping and receiving operations
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Review SOPs and participate in applicable Quality events as assigned and in a timely manner
  • Receive, inspect, and accession incoming biospecimen shipments from clinical sites, research partners, and external couriers, verifying manifest accuracy and specimen condition upon arrival.
  • Enter specimen data into LIMS or other tracking databases with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Label biospecimens appropriate per job requirements
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies between physical specimens and accompanying documentation
  • Maintain detailed chain-of-custody records throughout all specimen handling steps.
  • Store specimens under appropriate conditions (ambient, refrigerated, -20°C, -80°C, or liquid nitrogen) in designated biorepository locations.
  • Conduct routine inventory audits and reconcile physical stock against LIMS records to ensure accuracy.
  • Monitor and document ultra-low temperature freezer and cryogenic storage conditions; respond promptly to equipment alarms.
  • Manage specimen retrieval and preparation for distribution to researchers, clinical laboratories, and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the inbound and outbound shipment of biological specimens, ensuring compliance with IATA, DOT, and specialty courier regulations for biohazardous and dry ice materials.
  • Package specimens for domestic and international transport, completing all required shipping documents (permits, customs forms, etc.).
  • Communicate with couriers, and internal teams to facilitate pickups and confirm delivery status.
  • Maintain shipping supplies inventory and place orders as needed to prevent disruptions.
  • Follow all biosafety protocols and maintain a safe work environment in compliance with institutional, local, state, and federal regulations (CAP, HIPAA, IRB).
  • Participate in internal quality control programs, proficiency testing, and corrective action processes.
  • Assist in the development and review of SOPs and work instructions related to accessioning and logistics workflows.
  • Maintain training records and complete all required competency assessments on schedule.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with procurement, cell culture, and IT teams to support biorepository operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support biorepository operations.
