About The Position

Provides oversight and direction for processing and testing of laboratory specimens and technical decisions. Directs workforce, investigates and resolves problems, develops and implements procedures and processes, assures quality and regulatory compliance, assigns duties and delegates, and provides ongoing education, competency, and training. Serves as assigned on-call coverage for the department.

Requirements

  • Testing Areas: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution OR Bachelor’s degree equivalent as defined in the Code of Federal Regulations 42CFR493.1489(b)(3)(ii).
  • Non-Testing Areas: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license and proof of auto insurance as required by hospital policy and position-specific requirements.
  • Must pass motor vehicle background inspection, insurance eligibility, driving qualifications, and training set forth by Nationwide Children’s Hospital and maintain qualification of insurance guidelines.
  • Non-Testing Areas: Two years of experience in a similar laboratory, preferred.
  • Testing Areas: Associate’s degree, must have more than 4 years of experience in a designated testing specialty in a CLIA lab.
  • Testing Areas: Bachelor’s degree, must have more than 2 years of experience in a designated testing specialty in a CLIA lab.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills and ability to lead a team.
  • Effective organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates discipline-specific technical skills.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Promotes a team environment and maintains a cooperative and supportive atmosphere.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree, preferred.
  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and enforces safety guidelines, along with state, federal, and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Oversees quality assurance protocols as required.
  • Supervises instrument maintenance program, supports regular preventive maintenance, and maintains records of service.
  • Attends continuing education seminars, workshops, and maintains current knowledge.
  • Trains new staff members and ensures competency regarding processes and protocols.
  • Maintains fiscal accountability by maximizing resources, monitoring supplies and replenishing as needed.
  • Provides appropriate management of financial resources and contributes to section planning, budgeting, and overall processes.
  • Establishes awareness of strengths and weaknesses while seeking opportunities to develop further.
  • Develops and maintains clear goals for operation and maintains positive towards attainment.
  • Monitors day-to-day laboratory operations and schedules.
  • Selects, trains and motivates staff.
  • Maintains equitable and appropriate workflow and responsibilities, awareness of staff development issues, provides timely and specific feedback and coaching.
  • Provides oversight to processing, testing, and resulting specimens.
  • Creates, updates, educates, promotes, implements, and maintains policies and procedures.
  • Maintains working knowledge of technical principles, instrumentation, processes, and technology.
  • For testing area fills the role of the CLIA “General Supervisor” for High Complexity testing and “Technical Consultant” for Moderate Complexity testing.
