Manages the daily operation of the Biomedical Service Engineering department during all hours of operation. Ensures that procedures are performed according to section protocol. Provides technical expertise on improving the quality of testing through improved performance of instrumentation and reduction in downtime. Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, incubators, balances, and microscopes.
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory instruments including analyzers and liquid handling devices.
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.
  • PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.
  • ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.
  • Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.
  • Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the daily operation of the Biomedical Service Engineering department during all hours of operation.
  • Ensures that procedures are performed according to section protocol.
  • Provides technical expertise on improving the quality of testing through improved performance of instrumentation and reduction in downtime.
  • Provides and documents employee mentoring and counseling as necessary and provides input to management for subsequent counseling or disciplinary action.
  • Conducts or oversees weekly huddle meetings, quarterly 1 on 1 meeting, and annual performance reviews with staff.
  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining the gas storage supply at the Central Facility.
  • Develops written procedures for equipment maintenance and repair that complies with regulatory requirements, meets the needs of the laboratory sections, and minimizes instrument downtime.
  • Manages and maintains all technical wide systems (e.g. AIMS, Rees, Artel).
  • Is the liaison between Biomedical Service Engineering and the Automation Team.
  • Assists department with evaluating the equipment lifecycle costs and recommending replacement purchases.
  • Maintains records of service requests including cost of time and materials. Records must be accessible and complete and comply with all regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains inventory of critical spare parts to ensure rapid repair of instruments.
  • Continues to increase knowledge and skills relative to instrumentation and preventive maintenance through reading, networking, and attending courses.
  • Oversees maintenance and repairs of equipment associated with large scale automation e.g. the Automated Track System Connex, (ATS), Motoman, Daifuku, Magnemotion.
  • Utilize repair history to design and implement appropriate preventative maintenance schedules on all systems.
  • Meets regularly with large scale automation users and managers and provides procedures, continuing training, and problem resolution.
  • Provides operator training for new employees and continued training for existing operators.
  • Liaison between ARUP IT departments and instrument vendors for software issues.
  • Involved in the analysis, evaluation, and repair of existing equipment and the evaluation, validation, and installation of new equipment.
  • Provides technical expertise in the calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ensure the inventory database and maintenance schedule of laboratory instrumentation and equipment is maintained.
  • Facilitates preventive maintenance and repair of laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Assists purchasing managers and technical supervisors in the evaluation and negotiation of service contracts, assists in the evaluation of future equipment purchases.
  • Assess instrument specifications and coordinate with purchasing supervisor in the development and implementation of an equipment standardization policy for common laboratory equipment (i.e., centrifuges, incubators, etc.).
  • Reviews scheduling needs of the department.
  • Provides a timely written schedule for all employees.
  • Provides coverage as necessary to provide adequate staffing to meet service needs.
  • Reviews time and attendance sheets and submits to payroll by the defined deadline.
  • Provides summary of deviations, problems and overtime to management, as needed.
  • Enforces the ARUP time and attendance policies.
  • Assists management by providing input for Strategic Planning, annual budget, and Standards of performance.
  • Recommends merit increases.
  • Reports budget variations and workload fluctuations to managment.
  • Meets all deadlines in providing requested information.
  • Performs procedures as workload and staffing demand.
  • Complies with all standards of performance of related Job Description/Primary Purposes.
  • Maintains effective communications and good working relationships with all members of the Section’s Management team.
  • Assesses departmental staffing needs; interviews and hires qualified individuals to meet staffing needs.
  • Participates in required safety training and other continuing education as requests.
  • Directs training and monitors the competency and performance of the employees in the Biomedical Service Engineering department and ensures that duties are performed according established policies, procedures, and accreditation requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
