About The Position

The Biomedical Informatics Specialist bridges the gap between biomedical/clinical research and technology. This role applies expertise in biomedical informatics, clinical data, NLP, and data science to support NLM's translational science efforts, tool development, and applied research activities. Staff in this role communicate clearly across clinical, scientific, and technical teams.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or PhD in Biomedical Informatics, Health Informatics, Bioinformatics, or related field.
  • Minimum 4–6 years of experience in biomedical or clinical informatics research or development.
  • Strong knowledge of clinical terminologies and ontologies (SNOMED CT, ICD-10, LOINC, RxNorm, MeSH).
  • Experience with NLP for biomedical/clinical text.
  • Familiarity with FHIR, HL7, and health data interoperability standards.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R; experience with ML/DL frameworks.
  • Understanding of human subjects research protections (IRB, 45 CFR Part 46).
  • Experience with PHI/PII data handling in FISMA environments.
  • Strong scientific writing and oral communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of NIH/NLM resources (PubMed, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support applied research and development in biomedical informatics, image processing, machine learning, and clinical data science.
  • Conduct and support translational science research including user surveys, stakeholder interviews, and usability testing.
  • Document technical project requirements and timelines; coordinate internal and external dependencies.
  • Create and manage action plans for product development aligned with user needs.
  • Prepare materials to publicize product features and solicit/analyze community feedback.
  • Translate user feedback into business requirements and development plans.
  • Participate in resource analysis, design, estimation, development, testing, and maintenance.
  • Design and implement applications using industry standards and best practices.
  • Ensure architecture is secure, extensible, and integrable with existing NLM/NIH systems.
  • Support clinical data analytics including data linkage, longitudinal studies, and EHR data analysis.
  • Apply NLP techniques to biomedical text (extraction, classification, summarization).
  • Support data interoperability and FHIR/HL7 standards implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with HHS, NIH, NLM, and LHNCBC security and operational policies.
  • Utilize Agile and Scrum frameworks to deliver project milestones on time.
  • Assist in generating status updates and progress briefings for management and Government officials.
