About The Position

This position is in the Healthcare Technology Management Service of the Durham VA Health Care System in Durham, North Carolina. The Biomedical Engineer serves as a staff advisor to the Chief of Healthcare Technology Management Service on healthcare technology management, engineering principles, and practices related to the position’s specialization. The role provides biomedical engineering expertise for medical technology infrastructure, physical planning, installation, relocation, and activation associated with construction, renovation, clinical service expansion, and equipment deployment projects. The engineer translates clinical and medical equipment needs into physical space, utility, environmental, installation, connectivity, and maintenance-access requirements, coordinating these requirements through planning, design, construction, installation, acceptance testing, activation, and transition to operations. The role develops and applies standardized medical technology infrastructure requirements and activation practices across assigned projects and clinical areas. Working with clinical services, the engineer translates clinical functions and workflows into project-specific equipment and space requirements; develops equipment lists, room schedules, placement recommendations, and installation requirements; and coordinates equipment selection, standardization, replacement, and reuse with the Lifecycle Management Biomedical Engineer and clinical stakeholders. Lifecycle strategy and replacement decisions remain with the responsible Lifecycle Management function. The engineer also coordinates the documented transfer of activated equipment to clinical services and HTM operational support staff. The position performs biomedical engineering analyses and develops technical recommendations and criteria concerning equipment siting, utilities, environmental conditions, structural interfaces, installation, maintainability, and operational suitability. It provides technical support for acquisition and contract administration for equipment and installation services, including requirements for dimensions, utility demands, site preparation, delivery, installation, commissioning, and training. As technical project lead for assigned projects, the engineer coordinates HTM, Engineering/Facilities Management, cybersecurity/integration, and BESS support. The engineer maintains the medical equipment portion of project scopes, work breakdown structures, schedules, milestones, risk registers, issue logs, and action-item tracking; compiles readiness findings; recommends actions to HTM and activation leadership; and escalates unresolved installation-readiness issues before installation or activation. The position also provides biomedical engineering analysis for medical device hazard investigations and root-cause analyses involving infrastructure interfaces or installation conditions. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, either 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. or 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Compressed or flexible schedules and ad hoc telework may be available according to departmental needs. This is not a virtual position.
