About The Position

Teacher Tutors is seeking part-time Biology tutors who are currently practicing, New Jersey-certified teachers to join their team on a flexible basis. The role is ideal for certified teachers who want flexible, well-paid part-time work alongside their classroom role and who enjoy working one-on-one with students. Tutors will support high school students across standard, honors, and AP Biology. Sessions can take place in students’ homes, at the library, at the Livingston, NJ office, or online. The company matches families to tutors based on preferred travel radius.

Requirements

  • Active New Jersey teaching certification in Biological Science or a related science endorsement.
  • Currently teaching in a classroom setting.
  • Demonstrated mastery of biology at the level(s) you’ll be tutoring (high school standard, honors, and/or AP Biology), with the ability to scale up to more advanced coursework.
  • Tutoring, TA, or classroom teaching experience with students at the relevant grade levels.
  • Working familiarity with the relevant curriculum standards and exam frameworks (e.g., NGSS and the AP Biology course and exam description) and the areas where students most often struggle, such as genetics problems, cellular respiration and photosynthesis, meiosis, and interpreting experimental data.
  • Strong communication skills and the patience to work with students who may arrive frustrated, anxious, or burned out after a rough test or assignment.
  • Ability to plan individualized sessions and adapt in real time when a planned approach isn’t landing, including explaining the same concept in multiple ways until it clicks.
  • Availability for afternoon, evening, or weekend hours during the school year, with extra capacity around exam season and finals.
  • Comfort with educational technology.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license for in-home sessions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching AP Biology, and familiarity with the AP Biology course and exam description, free-response question types, and scoring.
  • A track record of strong outcomes with biology students at the levels you will be tutoring (e.g., grade improvement, AP score gains).
  • Background or experience that allows you to support advanced or specialized coursework, such as AP Biology, honors-level molecular biology or genetics, or introductory college biology.
  • Familiarity with the major textbooks and curricula commonly used in these courses, so you can meet students inside the framework their teacher is using.
  • Real-world or professional experience (academic, industry, or research) that helps you make abstract concepts concrete, for example, connecting genetics, lab technique, or field biology to work you’ve done.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver one-on-one biology tutoring sessions tailored to each student’s course, instructor’s expectations, and learning goals.
  • Plan lessons and prepare materials (practice sets, review guides, worked problem sets, genetics and data-analysis practice, diagram and process reviews, lab concept reviews, exam-style questions, and structured exam-prep schedules as test dates approach).
  • Build students’ fluency with core biology skills and concepts (cell structure and function, biochemistry basics, cellular respiration and photosynthesis, mitosis and meiosis, genetics and inheritance, molecular biology and gene expression, evolution and natural selection, ecology, and anatomy and physiology) and their ability to move between different representations of the same idea (diagrammatic, molecular, and process-based).
  • Track progress across sessions and adjust pacing, materials, and difficulty based on what’s working.
  • Submit a short session note after each tutoring session and flag concerns to our Director early.
  • Communicate clearly and warmly with parents.
  • Contribute to our team’s shared practice: share what’s working, ask questions, and help us keep raising the bar.

  • W-2 employment option with payroll, taxes, and liability coverage handled by Teacher Tutors.
  • 1099 contractor option available for those with their own professional liability insurance and registered LLC.
