About The Position

AECOM is seeking a Biologist - Aquatic Ecology to join their team in the greater Montreal area. This role involves fieldwork, primarily from May to October, focusing on monitoring eel ladders at hydroelectric power stations and transporting eels. The rest of the year is office-based, involving data analysis, environmental studies, and report writing. The position requires versatility, motivation, and a results-oriented approach, with an interest in year-round environmental studies. The role offers a dynamic, collaborative, and training-oriented environment.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in biology or related field
2+ years of relevant experience
Valid driver's license
Legally authorized to work in Canada
Ability to travel occasionally to the United States and meet applicable entry and work requirements for temporary assignments related to migration monitoring projects
Pleasure craft operator card and proficiency in operating motorized boats and launching them
Interest in learning specialized electronic tools and software
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
Excellent analytical, synthesis, and writing skills
Excellent command of French (oral and written)
Excellent command of English (oral and written) - required for collaboration with English-speaking colleagues, clients, and partners, and for participation in certain migration monitoring projects involving stakeholders outside Quebec
Excellent communication skills
Organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and attention to detail
Autonomy, teamwork, and adaptability

Nice To Haves

Technical degree (DEC) in environment, natural environment techniques, bioecology, or TACH
Master's degree or graduate studies in environment
4 years of relevant experience
Experience in environmental studies, aquatic environment, or consulting/engineering consulting
Knowledge of software such as R, Systat, or ArcGIS
ASP Construction certification
Experience on or near hydroelectric structures
Experience in fish passage projects (holding, tagging)
Good ability to identify fish species in Quebec
Knowledge of electronics applied to field instruments
Experience in aquatic fauna inventories (fish, aquatic vegetation, mussels, hydrological surveys)
Complementary knowledge in flora, herpetofauna, small mammals, and birds

Responsibilities

Monitoring, maintenance, and proper functioning of eel ladders (including specialized electronic tools and software)
Planning field outings as a project manager
Autonomous work with limited supervision
Sampling: water, soil, benthos, sediment, eDNA
Characterization of aquatic habitats (biophysical, hydromorphological)
Inventories: fish, mussels, aquatic plants, etc.
Data collection using digital tools
Use of equipment: multi-probes, DGPS, nets, hydrological instruments
Measuring, handling, and tagging fish
Adherence to health and safety procedures
Writing reports after each outing
Operating motorized boats
Role of biologist or project manager in aquatic environment
Compilation, analysis, and interpretation of data
Participation in environmental studies and impact assessments
Preparation of authorization requests and technical reports
Writing protocols and technical documents
Other related project tasks
