About The Position

HELIX Environmental Planning (HELIX) is expanding its team in Northern California and is seeking a mid-level Biologist. This role is designed for an experienced professional who excels in fieldwork, technical writing, and contributing significantly to environmental stewardship across various projects. The Biologist will join a growing Northern California team, with opportunities for leadership, mentorship, and technical expertise expansion. The position, based out of the Roseville office, offers a hybrid schedule, allowing for 4 days in the office or field and 1 work-from-home day per week. As a Biologist, daily tasks will be dynamic, ranging from conducting aquatic resource mapping or special-status species surveys to drafting biological technical reports or regulatory permit applications. Other days might involve assisting in establishing mitigation preserves for special-status species like the California tiger salamander or vernal pool fairy shrimp. The Biologist will work both independently and collaboratively, managing fieldwork, data analysis, and report writing to ensure project success. There will be opportunities for mentorship from a principal biologist specializing in regulatory permitting and mitigation establishment, offering extensive growth potential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, or related environmental science
  • 5+ years of professional biology experience, including 2+ years in Northern California
  • Experience with environmental consulting and independent biological assessments
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills
  • Ability to hike long distances in varying terrain and conditions
  • Valid California Driver’s License and ability for overnight travel

Nice To Haves

  • Floristic and special-status species survey experience in Northern California
  • Proficiency with the Jepson Manual and taxonomic keys
  • Wetland delineation and restoration experience
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., ISA Arborist, Wetland certifications)
  • Agency coordination and field team leadership experience

Responsibilities

  • Lead or assist with biological surveys, vegetation mapping, and jurisdictional delineations
  • Conduct and lead construction and restoration monitoring
  • Prepare and review biological technical reports and CEQA/NEPA documentation
  • Support wetland permit applications and regulatory coordination
  • Maintain accurate field notes, maps, and project documentation
  • Assist with proposals, business development, and project delivery
  • Travel overnight occasionally as required
