Axle is seeking a Biological Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) located in Bethesda, MD.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a Master’s degree.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in biology or a related field.
  • Demonstrates experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office, Excel, and statistical software such as Prism.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of maintaining accurate and detailed records.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures.
  • Professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of scientific specialty or subspecialty and related disciplines, such as biology, microbiology, chemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, virology, genetics

Responsibilities

  • Review and research the proper handling and methods of utilization for different biological and chemical materials in regular use in the laboratory
  • Maintain accurate, daily records of experiments and results in pen in bound laboratory notebooks
  • Perform a wide variety of complex procedures and techniques; cell culture, DNA analysis, DNA isolation, DNA purification, DNA sequencing, flow cytometry, gene cloning, manipulation of radioactive isotopes
  • Provides technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life
  • Provide specialized scientific support, including participation on the design, planning, conduct, and publication of experiments
  • Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures
  • Prepare various media, stock supplies, and other reagents for use in the laboratory
  • Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment
  • Work with human blood, body fluids or tissues, or other bloodborne pathogens in the research laboratory
  • Perform classification of pathogenic strains isolated from patients
  • Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures
  • Assist in laboratory supervision of student training such as teaching research concepts and helping with practice for presentation on an ad-hoc basis
