Biological Scientist III

University of Florida•Palm Beach, FL
•$75,000 - $85,000

About The Position

The Biological Scientist III conducts laboratory, greenhouse, and field research focused on emerging diseases in sugarcane. The position designs, executes, and oversees experiments to isolate and identify pathogens, develops novel pathogen detection and identification assays, and evaluates the pathogenicity of fungal and bacterial isolates. The role also performs inoculation experiments to assess sugarcane breeding germplasm responses and evaluates disease symptoms in field trials. The position collects and processes samples for pathogen isolation and identification, collaborates with breeding programs and industry technicians to establish and maintain on-farm trials, and travels to field locations to complete research activities. It maintains research records, conducts statistical and DNA sequence analyses—including phylogenetic, multilocus phylogenetic, and variant-calling analyses—and writes manuscripts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience; or a master's degree in biology or a related field and five years of experience; or a doctoral degree in biology or a related field and two years of experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctoral degree in an agriculture-related field.
  • At least eight years of experience in one or more of the following: research under laboratory and greenhouse conditions; microbiology and molecular biology techniques; DNA sequence analysis and phylogenetic analysis; or experimental design and statistical analysis of data.
  • Experience working on sugarcane or row agronomic crops.
