Biological Scientist II
About The Position
This position involves data collation and research visualization, statistical analysis, scientific manuscript and report writing, workshop and conference organization, and project management. The role requires working independently and in collaboration with a Principal Investigator (P.I.) to establish research objectives, develop experimental protocols, and support fire ecology and management research. The incumbent will use various software for data analysis and visualization, maintain organized records, and contribute to scientific publications and presentations. The position also involves assisting with the development of workshops and scientific conference sessions, and coordinating work assignments for various projects.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and three years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with one year of relevant experience.
- Valid Driver License
Nice To Haves
- A Master’s or PhD degree with a research focus on fire ecology and/or large spatial data analysis.
- Extensive knowledge of large data collation and analysis.
- Experience with Google Earth Engine, GIS and R statistical software.
- Knowledge of fire ecology, fire regime dynamics, the wildland-urban interface, and fire behavior modelling in eastern U.S. forested systems and/or the U.S. Great Plains.
- Strong organizational skills that will allow them to maintain detailed data inventories and procedures.
- Previous experience writing and publishing scientific literature.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Responsibilities
- Establish research objectives and develop experimental protocols.
- Use software such as ArcPly, ArcMap, R, Google Earth Engine, Behave Plus, FlamMap, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint to support fire ecology and management research.
- Assess and summarize large datasets from a range of sources.
- Run simulations in fire modelling programs.
- Create visualizations for presentations, research papers, and extension materials.
- Determine data analysis methods, schedules, and procedures in accordance with established research protocols.
- Conduct statistical analysis on large datasets, developing and adjusting appropriate procedures and approaches using scientific literature to address research objectives.
- Maintain organized records and produce research summaries in both print and electronic formats.
- Contribute to literature review for the framing and development of scientific manuscripts and reports.
- Assist with the writing of scientific manuscripts, including methods and results.
- Assist with the development of workshops and scientific conference sessions presenting ongoing research.
- Assist in planning and coordinating work assignments and research activities for various projects, ensuring deadlines and deliverables are met.
- May assist in coordinating staff across various projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Work independently while maintaining regular communication with the Principal Investigator.
