About The Position

This is a full-time Career Service (CS) Biological Scientist II position working with the Department of Health in Lee County. The Biological Scientist II position is under the supervision of the Biological Scientist IV - SES. The incumbent must be knowledgeable on Communicable Disease Department functions to provide services on a continuous basis. Must be able to work independently and perform assessments of situations in communicable disease investigations. This position has the responsibility of conducting surveillance and disease investigations, including identifying and alerting potential contacts of cases. Incumbent is knowledgeable about all aspects of communicable disease and works as an extension of and in cooperation with Disease Control section regarding surveillance for acts of terrorism and the prevention and control of communicable disease.

Requirements

Responsibilities

  • Receives reports of communicable diseases and animal bites from providers, laboratories, and the community at-large.
  • Investigates suspect reportable diseases and animal bites in accordance with Florida statutes and rules.
  • Reports diseases in designated database within required timeframes.
  • Works closely with other departments, providers, and community partners regarding communicable disease issues and reportable disease cases.
  • Monitors reportable disease and syndromic surveillance databases.
  • Assists in determining if additional investigation is warranted.
  • Prepares reports, surveys, data studies, answer questionnaires, and any other necessary paperwork as required.
  • Assists the public with accurate information when requested.
  • Distributes information to the community and medical providers regarding reportable diseases.
  • Assists with records, phone calls, relaying messages and keeping staff informed of sensitive situations.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, symposiums and any programs pertinent to the position or that will keep the incumbent current.
  • Provides in-services to the staff as requested or required and assists with training.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
