About The Position

This position is for a Biological and Laboratory Safety Specialist within the Division of Administrative Affairs at Cal Poly Pomona. The division's mission is to provide high-quality fiscal, human, and facility services to support the university through partnerships and innovative solutions. The specialist will administer and maintain the university's biosafety program, implement and manage laboratory safety programs, develop and deliver safety training, ensure regulatory compliance, respond to incidents, and contribute to program development and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree - Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field
  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State
  • Two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
  • Working skills and knowledge of environmental health and safety principles, practices, methodologies, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting safety inspections and incident investigations.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify environmental health and safety risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Strong organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with diverse stakeholders, develop and deliver environmental health and safety training, influence decision-making processes, and communicate complex issues in a clear and concise manner.
  • Knowledge of environmental health and safety laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Proficient in using environmental health and safety software and tools.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

Nice To Haves

  • HAZWOPER certified (40 hour) or able to complete within 1 year of hire.
  • First Aid, CPR, AED certified or able to complete required training within 1 year of hire.
  • Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain Cal Poly Pomona’s biosafety program in compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines (e.g., NIH, CDC, CDPH).
  • Conduct risk assessments for research involving biological agents, recombinant DNA, and biohazardous materials.
  • Support Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) activities, including protocol review and meeting coordination.
  • Develop and update biosafety policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Ensure proper registration and tracking of biohazardous materials and research activities.
  • Implement and manage laboratory safety programs covering chemical hygiene, hazard communication, and general lab safety.
  • Conduct routine laboratory inspections and audits to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Assist with implementation of the Chemical Hygiene Plan and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Monitor corrective actions and ensure timely resolution of identified inspection findings.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for faculty, staff, and students (e.g., biosafety, lab safety, bloodborne pathogens).
  • Maintain training records and ensure compliance with regulatory training requirements.
  • Provide guidance and consultation on safe laboratory practices and procedures.
  • Create educational materials and outreach initiatives to promote safety awareness.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to biosafety and laboratory safety.
  • Prepare and submit required regulatory reports and documentation.
  • Maintain records related to inspections, incidents, and program activities.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes and update programs accordingly.
  • Respond to laboratory incidents, exposures, spills, and emergencies involving biological or chemical hazards.
  • Conduct incident investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Recommend and implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Part of the campus emergency response team.
  • Evaluate and improve existing safety programs and initiatives.
  • Participate in campus safety committees and working groups.
  • Support strategic planning efforts for EHS programs.
  • Benchmark best practices and implement innovative safety solutions.
